I think they were $100 new but they have been discontinued and replaced with an updated model a few years ago. They were going for about half that on the auction site last year NIB. The clicker is weak, a livelined herring can easily over ride it unless the end cap is tightened but the reel feels smooth and solid and the drag is OK. I've only used mine in fresh water and haven't really punished it but have caught Stripers in heavy river current with no problems.

If your talking about the "old" S400 I have 2 of them and fished dorado with them...never had a problem. I did recently upgrade the drag with Carbontex and the reels are even better.

I Suggest that you save your money up and buy the Calcutta.I own both and there is no comparison. But the catala is ok for lite use,I prefer power pro on my reels and i set the drag tight.I would not suggest doing this with the catala. I will say that once you get them set these are both reel nice casting reels. But everyone has different ideas and ways.

DBK,

the catala is not made anymore it is replaced by the corvalus.

they are good and you can beat 'em up but ya gotta keep them kleen.

I had a 401 catala,my uncle liked it so much I sold it to him,I still have a 301 catala and I fish schoolies with it.kinda lite but smooth and casts great.

I would do what the oter guy saied, save your money and get a calcutta or an okuma induron 401.

I almost forgot the Shimano Cardiff 401 is a great reel too,I have 2 of them and smoooooth is the word all for $90.00 at my friends bait shop.

they also come in lefty too.

so check out the cardiff has arb bearings and I added dartainium drag.

cheers M8
