Have you looked at the tail pipe of any car you have driven???
All have black wet or dry soot .
Lawn mowers are the most abused piece of equipment known to man!!! What do you mean it takes oil in the crankcase?????
What it doesn't like to run on 2 year old gas??????
What is a tune up?? Changing the oil Is NOT a tune up!
But yes unless you are going to learn about the maintenance of your lawn mower just buy a new one when the old one dies and be sure to throw the old one in the dump to be crushed or put it beside the road with a free sign on it and see how long before it disappears!!!!

Sounds like either too much oil in the mower, or someone turned it on it's side, and turned the blade to take it off, back pumping oil in the system. Need to clean out the air filter, probably full of oil, and now a fouled plug, or even someone putting old weedeater gas in it, or combination of above. Also whatever the reason, it's going to have a build up of burned oil and carbon in the muffler that will need to be soaked/scraped and cleaned at the block side.
Check the oil level and air filter first, to see what's up......

Agreed. First things first. Make sure you have the proper oil level. Do not overfill. If so the crankcase back pressure can cause oil blow out. It's not an uncommon occurrence.

If you do buy a Lawnboy don't get it at Homeys mine was used about 1 season always cleaned the deck on top and underneath. Now the thing has rot near the front wheels and the left side of deck I should of bought it from the guy down the block but the Wife bought it for Fathers day didn't realise they aren't the same models.

Mike go over to the Sears warehouse on Frontage Rd in West Haven. They usually have some deals on demo and refurb mowers with full warranty. I got a good deal on a Husqevarna there last year.

Before you freak out, why not change the air filter, spark plug, oil and gasoline?
If it's running, there is probably NOTHING wrong with it, besides needing a little TLC.

I was just going to post that, unless you just want a new mower? Like over oiling a reel, I'm not going to buy a new one for the same reason

Also mine would stop when trying to cut thick weeds. My mower hit metal pipe on the ground which stopped, i was able to restart it. Could it be indicative of another problem other than air filter or too much engine oil? Thanks.
