There are lots of variables--and even the same guy may not give the same bid, depending on the situation. One of those situations is his opinion of how much he thinks you might be willing to pay.
Each installer has his own recommendation of the brand that he wants to install. Within each brand are numerous potential add-ons that may or may not appeal to you.
I've talked with an installer or two that I didn't think I'd be able to work easily with. One guy told me that I'd need a new service entrance--others have told me that I don't--etc etc.
At any rate, I'd recommend setting aside some time to have several installers come to the house for a closer look. Those that take the time to talk with you and to look closely at your situation should get extra points.
I'll be interested to hear from others as well. Good luck.

The price will also depend on the maintenance contract.

Stay away from bottom grade brands. I would recomend middle of the line. Name brands like carrier, lennox, trane you are going to pay top dollar for. companys like ruud, rheem, comfortmaker, arcoaire, heil all have the same warranties as the name brands. The standard is 10 years on the compressor, 5 years parts and sometimes they cover labor for 5 years to. PM me if you have any questions
I received two estimates since i posted. One quoted $3,000 for the sytem, but that is using the present day freon, not the R14(??). The second company quoted me $3,400 utilizing the R14. Both systems are 13 seer, 3 ton units, the first being a trane, the second a lennox. I have two more guys coming out next week, and I will see what they say. the warranties are 1 year labor, 20 year on the compressor and ten year parts.

Anyway, the quotes ranged from $10,700, $9800, and $8650. I found a local A/C Technician that works on our office building system and does side jobs. He quoted me $5300, I paid for the materials direct to the supply house $2300 for an Arcoaire System, 10 year warranty, $1400 for the duct work and $1600 for his labor. Saved myself over 3K and he is halfway done, two Saturdays to do the whole job. Nothing against the contractors but they have alot of overhead to cover and I kinda cut that piece out of the equation. If you can find a local tradesman that is reliable and good, you can save a bundle. if its a straight replacement, Id say your looking around 3500- 4K for a good deal and around 5-6k on the high end.
