The only difference I can see in the write up on their web site is that the Avid series uses "hi modulus SCIII graphite" and the Premier series uses "SCII graphite and SCIIW woven graphite." Is this a major difference? The Avid rods seem to run about 40 to 50 bucks more.
St. Croix Avid vs Premier rods

I have the Premier 12' Heaver (model PSRC120XH2)...it has the SCIIW woven graphite.
The rod comparable to this rod in the Avid series is model ASRC110H2 which is also a Heaver but at 11'...
The difference as was explain to me is that SCIII is lighter material...
When I comapred the rods side by side, the Avid was definitely lighter, albeit it was 12" shorter...still even at equal lenghts, the Avid would be lighter... The St. Croix rep said that the Avid rod was actually stronger too...
BTW, that Premier 12' Heaver is extremely powerful...one of the stoutest rods in the Heaver category available today...right up there with the Breakaway/All Star 1509... The rod does not start to load until you got at least a 10 oz payload on it...

I second Poppy's comments.
I own an 8 foot Avid 1 piece that is light, sort of "stiff" but casts nice anyhow. Also, I have a 2 piece 10' custom rod made on a Premier blank. I really like the rod overall. I wish they made it in a 1 piece but they don't. It has a larger diameter butt section that, let's say, a Lamiglas 10' 1M.
