Never tried them, but I wouldn't be surprised if they worked. Snails make up a part of a lot of predatory fish's diet, including(I would imagine) bass. I had some pet Oscars that loved snails.

I have tried slugs when I was much younger, once you put the hook through them your left with a slimy mess and just the skin. To some it up they did not work well in my opinion.

I've used slugs many time for bait, mostly for smallmouth bass. The secret is to catch them in beer! You put a paper plate filled with beer outside in area were slugs frequent. The slugs climb inside and drown in the beer. The alcohol in the beer cleans some of the slime off. This helps the beer soak into the slug. I know it sounds crazy, but it works. My grandfather used to do it all of the time.

NEMO,
Don't the slugs then die? Or do they stay alive (and probably happy)? My garden is full of slugs and my fridge is full of beer--I can probably go a whole season without buying bait for smallie fishing.

Baitboy, yeah they die, but it doesn't really matter. Even when alive they don't have that much movement. I think they resemble leeches when fished in a stream or pond. Your garden is definitely the best place to try this. I can get a dozen some nights in my garden. You really have to try them!

Hey NEMO,
How do you fish them? Do you fish them on the bottom or drift them? I can't remember ever trying them, but the thought has crossed my mind once or twice. I wonder if trout will hit them, if so bring some to the creek with ya and we'll see.

Tight Lines,
DonW

Don, I you can fish them just like you'd fish a nightcrawler. They are great in a slow moving stream for smallmouths.

I use em all the time... better than worms or crickets. I've caught some of the biggest largemouth I've ever caught using fresh slugs. (a 6 pounder last week!)  Much better than plastic worms if you're fishing the banks...  best part is, slugs stay on the hook much better than most live baits.
