  1. I'm interested in surf fishing as Open Charter Boats get kind of expensive after a while. I have never been surf fishing and was wondering what are some the basics you need to know about surf fishing. I live just outside NYC and would appreciate any advice or suggestions on Tackle, Gear, Bait and Locations to start fishing in the tri state area. I like to fish for fluke, sea bass, stripers, porgies and just about any edible fish.
  2. I'm thinking about getting the 9 foot 6000 size reel penn battle 2 combo. Is this a good combo to catch stripers? I've heard lots of people complain about the poor rod quality. Also, what size fish can this combo handle?
  3. New to the Portland area and curious to hear some favorites from locals: 1. Tide/time of day? 2. Top water lure? 3. Swim/crank bait? 4. Colors? 5. Any local shops or people making good bucktails? So far I've been fishing the outgoing at dawn at a tidal river with moderately strong current. I've had some success using techniques that have worked for me in NYC/cape cod waters using white bucktails, bone sp minnow, tsunami swim shad and white/blue talkin popper, but I'm wondering if any locals have some experienced advice to offer. Thanks for any info, Ryan
  4. Hey guys I just bought a house in Ronkonkama and I was wondering where to find some good surf fishing spots. I have lived in the huntington area my entire life and its crazy to think I have to start all over with finding new spots if I want to be able to get out after work this season. I'm not looking for any spot burning just some beaches on either north or south shore that have some decent surf to fish from. I have primarily surfed from the north shore my longest rod is an 11' which I'm guessing should still do the job on the south shore. Thanks for your time and good luck out there!
  5. Will be driving down to Ormond Beach from NYC in mid Feb, new area for me, so looking for the usual advice on what to bring from the gear locker. Usually fish the suds from Southampton to East Hampton with artificials and occasionally bait, but need to sort through the kit to narrow what I'm going to pack. It is mostly spin gear, but also 4,5,6 and 8wt fly rods. Wifes' cousin moved down there last October, and is interested in learning how to fish. Read some threads here, most are saying live bait gets the best results so I'll focus there. Since the cousins new place sits right on Ormond Beach, I'll probably be fishing out front on the beach, but that doesn't preclude elsewhere. Presumably the same beach rules apply as far as structure, sloughs etc. Open to suggestions on what to pack etc.
  6. Looking at heading to the Jersey shore Friday morning perhaps Seaside or points south to try walking the beach casting plugs for stripers. I have everything Ill need but need tips from Delmarva guys on any experience where to go and start. Any of AI or Ocean City/ Delaware guys have luck doing this? I see alot of videos of guys walking from block rock pile to rock pile casting into the wash this time of year before weather really turns colder. Ill have my 10' 1-4 oz Nomad Surf rod with my Slammer 5500 spooled with 30lb ultracast. Ive got talkin + superstrike poppers, sp minnows, bucktails, weighted swim shads etc.
  7. Went out to the beach today to fish for striped bass. Didn't get anything but had a good time. Check out the video.
  8. Hello all: Anyone have any info on the fishing conditions off the beaches on Davis Park? East and West ends? Thanks.

  10. I'm heading down to Naples next week (early March) for my last spring break in college, before catching a full time job, with a few freshwater and two saltwater rods. My friends will be out while I'll be catching sand fleas in the surf to catch some small fish to use for bait or to eat (pompano). I then plan on using my saltwater rods to put some bait fish out beyond the surf to try my luck at some sharks in the evenings/night. For those of you that have fished the Naples area, any tips for someone form the north that's not as experienced in surf fishing? Is March a good time for sharks? Any good eating fish I can catch without a boat other than pompano? Are sand fleas good bait and any half of a fish good for sharks? Thanks for the help ahead of time!
  11. Hi. Has anyone been on Monomoy Island in Chatham? How is the fishing there (from shore)? Also, is there any way to get there without a boat. People always write about how it is inaccessible without a boat. However, the island appears to be connected to Chatham with a narrow strip.
  12. Not sure if this belongs here or PG. Discuss.
  13. Hi fellas this is my first time attempting to sell a rod on this forum so bare with me. I have a Tsunami Classic Series 7' ft Lure 1/4 - 1 oz Rod (1 piece) i want to sell as its just collecting dust on my shelf. its in good condition only took it out a hand-full of times. cant justify keeping it when i hardly use it so want to sell to someone who will actively fish it. I purchased for $75 but am only asking $50 for it. Im based out of queens but have no problem meeting in long island around nassau county for cash to hand it over to a buyer or ill mail it out providing your comfortable paying for the shipping and paypal transaction cost. 14. This is an awesome bike - Awesome on the beach and trails. purchased in February of this year, it just does not fit me, its a little too big. Its a medium size. 15. I was looking for a alternative to wearing my full size wading boots. Preferably low cut. Something to wear for longer walks in summer conditions when in a bathing suit or even a wetsuit. Something protective enough to wear with korker strap ons, or I would consider putting in grip studs. I was looking at Keen water sandals (Newport h2). I like the toe cap, and the fact that sand could probably drain out the back. Anybody wear these with korker sandal strap ons? I heard small rocks get in them and really hurt. Is the Keen Water shoe a better bet? They look like low cut wading boots with a protective toe cap. Does the low cut shoes collect sand easier? I do own a pair of neoprene diving booties and I dont like wearing them in this situation. Anybody have any other ideas?
  16. Anyone see that Alberto Knie will be giving a talk up at Freeport about surf fishing, the best tactics to fish the beach/rocks, and best plugs to throw? Anyone interested in going? Anyone already planning on going? Its a free seminar/talk held at and by L.L. Bean
  17. I use a steelhead salmon Rod by Shakespeare for my light rod. But can't find it on the market anymore. Was thinking of buying the same one but daiwa version. Anyone use that rod or have any suggestions on another without breakin the bank?
  18. Hello Guys, This time I would like to talk about surf rods, specially Surf rods. I love surf fishing and Ive been practicing this type of fishing for a long time. From time to time i like to upgrade my set up and Ive try many rods. Now a days I own a 9´ surf legend MH 1-4 which I like but I am not 100% satisfy with it is for a 50/50 and I am looking for a 70/30. I am looking for a rod with a much heavier action a 7/3 since I usually cast from 1.5-2 onz. What rod recommendation do you guys suggest on a 9´ MH where I can cast the SP minnows and a 2.5 onc lure?

  20. So I have been looking over the forums the past couple days for info on Costa Rica and have found many good posts but wanted to start one of my own. Thank you ahead of time for anyone who can provide some good info for me. 1) We are going to Costa Rica next July to celebrate my 40th birthday. There are 6 couple and we are going to be staying somewhere between Tamarindo and Playa Ocotal on the beach. Can anyone recommend good areas to fish from shore between those locations? PM if it needs to be private please. 2) We are going to go on at least 2 charters one offshore and one inshore. Can anyone recommend some good guides in the area? 3) I would love to do some more hands on fishing for the inshore trip so popping and jigging would be preferred. Does anyone know of any specific guides known for that in that region? Any other info would be great to hear. Thank you again for your assistance and knowledge.
  21. I will be spending a week at Seacrest Beach starting early June. I welcome any comments on how to catch fish in the surf.
  22. Well ladies and gents I have gotten to a point where I think I should start learning how to make my own bucktails or at least start tying my own, but I need a little help knowing what I need. Can you fishing pros help me out? What is the name of the machine that hold the bucktail in place? What's a good brand, where can I get 1 and how much are they typically worth? What is the name of the tool that holds the thread straighten out to be wrapped around the bucktail? What coating is used to seal and protect the thread after its placement? Where can I get the color powder for coloring the bucktails? I am really interested in learning how to make some nice decorative and effective bucktails for striped bass in particular so I hope you all can help me out a bit. Thanks so much!!!!
