  1. After over a decade of wanting and waiting, I am finally getting into saltwater fly fishing. Even though I did not settle on which rod or reel to purchase, I have this constant itch to own saltwater flies. So I tried my local bait & tackle shops first and they do not sell any flies or fly tying supplies at all. So I took it upon myself to attempt to create my own saltwater flies from scraps of material around the house. I did not follow any tutorials or manual on these (clearly). Because I did not have the proper size or style hooks, body materials or even the right clear epoxy. I know they are tied crappy (no vise/clamp), their heads are flat and their eyes keep drooping because I used the wrong epoxy (table top). Be gentle, it's my first crack at this with zero experience. I've never seen a saltwater fly in person, no less attempted to tie one. Regardless they are the first three to make it into my empty fly box. Yellow/white/mylar is 6" on 3/0 hook Blue/white/mylar is 5" on #1 hook Gray/white/mylar is 7" on 3/0 hook
  2. Happy New Years All !! Seeing Dick liked to generate a new thread every New Year's for "All Things Fly Fishing" thought we'd start this new decade with a dedication to BonefishDick. The Betsy. I'm sure everyone misses him, his sage advice, and his posts. HT
  3. Hi, I was wondering what saltwater flies are best for mangrove snapper and grouper. I have been tying for awhile but I have yet to catch anything other than blue fish. Thanks

  5. Hey guys, First post, so I added a stupid joke... I am wondering if anyone wants to share winter striper tips. Obviously the action is coming to a end, but I know it's possible to catch em in the winter. How? Flies, Spots, Tactics? Anything helps! What do you call a fish without the eye? A fsh!
  6. I am taking a trip to Jupiter Florida in January. I was wondering what flies/colors/hook size people like to get on Jacks, Blues, and maybe Spanish (or other fish that would be in the area in January). The water I plan fly fishing is the surf from the inlet to the pier. Thanks!
  7. Looking to stock up on striper/albie flies. If there's someone that wants to tie up a batch in exchange for my Hydros SL IV (perfect 8-weight), that's preferable. I just had it refurbished directly through Orvis. The clutch release mechanism needed replaced, and it's as good as new now. Comes with the protective pouch.
  8. Looking to purchase a saltwater fly vise, I am looking for a vise that can handle 4/0 sized hooks. Thanks, Dylan
  9. Anyone familiar with best spots for fly fishing coastal Maine? As of now I'm thinking York, Kittery, Biddeford, Cape Porpoise areas but wanted to see if there are any secret gems out there that should be explored. Cheers!
  10. First post so, hello all! Planning a trip down to Marco Island for mid-May to do some fly fishing. I will be staying across the street from Tigertail Beach and I understand that gets pretty active as things heat up down there. Wondering if there are any extra tips, tricks, and info anyone has on their own excursions down that way and is willing to share. I'll be packing a 9-10 wt with floating and intermediate lines and am looking into some boots to wade through the muck and such. Please and thank you, tight lines!

  12. Hello, Is there a fly box (brand, model and size, please) that you’d recommend? Looking for something that I can carry with me when wading; something that can carry Surf Candies, Deceivers, Clouser Deep Minnows... the usual. What about out those of you who also like to carry longer flies such as flat saddles? Thank you, John
  13. I've got tons of flies beyond my overflowing boxes that I am just not using anymore. Most of these I tied myself, but a few are Fulling Mills (Orvis), Umpqua, or Rainy's, and one is from a fellow SOL'er. A few might have swam once before, but are in great shape. All but those few are new just stored for a while. *EDIT* Many of the Lot 2/Backcountry flies have weedguards $55 per lot (28-43 flies) shipped. That's under $2/fly! Lot 1: Great Striper Starter Kit Lot 2: Backcountry Bass, Snook, Redfish, Tarpon, Trout Lot 3: Freshwater Bass (or Blend of Fresh & Salt bass)
  14. In a few weeks, I'm headed down to Panama, into the wild coast, for a week of kayak fishing. While most of the action is on spinning and jigging gear, I'm bringing 10 and 12 wt setups with me as well. We'll be chasing Cubera Snappers, Roosters, maybe Schoolie Yellowfin, Amberjack, and who knows what else. My "go to" flies are half and halfs and big crease flies. Squid flies have also been suggested. I'm probably only going to bring around two dozen flies with me, so I'm looking for any other go to flies people might suggest. I simply don't have the room, with all the conventional gear coming along as well, to carry four different colors in three different sizes of 10 different flies, so I'm hoping to get the most "bang for my buck", so to speak... Thanks!
  15. As a response to the forum about cabelas and bass pro shops thread, give your local fly or tackle shop a shout out. I use a few on the east end of long island and they help me keep the lines tight. On the south fork, Ken at tight lines tackle is great for info and keeps the shop stocked with great products. On the north fork Steve and crew at wego tackle is loaded with all your bottom fishing needs. Support your local shop. What shop(s) takes care of you?
