My family and I will be staying in Salvo next week (8/8-15). I'm not expecting the fishing to be good, but I'm planning on taking a couple of light spinning rods (7' and 7'6") and a flyrod or two. The heavier of the two spinning rods (the 7'er) is rated up to 1.5 ounces. Should I bother taking my 9' Lami rated 1-3? I'm not planning on bait fishing unless the kids want to fish, but I have different stuff for them.
Is it worth wading the sound this time of year? Someone my brother knows was telling him to watch out for cottonmouths on the sound side. Is that true? Should I take waders for at least a little protection? Any restuarants anyone can recommend (distance doesn't matter much)? Any we should avoid? Thanks for any help. |

Take the 9' Lami for sure. Stop in The Fishing Hole Tackle shop there in Salvo and get you a few Glass Minnows, they are a casting spoon similar to a Hopkins. Early in the morning and in the evening throw them as far as you can and retreive them back fast. Should be some Spanish Macs and Blues around. Fishing is good in the sound now also, Gulps on a jighead shouls get you flounder, pups and speckled trout. Good luck and enjoy your vacation.

Be sure to try some gold Hopkins, either on the spinning rods or 2oz size on the 9 footer. some puppy drum are around. just bounce them across the bottom. you may want to head down toward the Point in Buxton. may be crowded though as it just reopened. sometimes tough to use lures down there. Ramp 55 down in Hatteras Village below the ferry landing usually has a good slough along the beach that can be productive. For dinner, Pop's in Buxton is casual and fun. Dinky's in Hatteras Village is a bit more upscale but still relaxed and good food. We are headed down to Buxton this afternoon for the weekend. If you make it to Buxton, stop in at Red Drum Tackle. they can get you up to date on what is going on out on the beaches. Good luck.
