Default OBX in Oct

I've never been there at all. I am considering coming down the latter part of October. Is it cold enough that I should bring nothing but sweat shirts and jeans or would it possibly be warm enough for shorts and tees. I will be beaching it and fishing a lot and just generally kicking back. Thanks in advance

I've been quite a few times in early/mid October. Bring clothes for warm weather and cooler weather. It can change day to day and hour to hour. I've found it though to be very pleasant for the most part. Some evening (after dark) could get fairly chilly but I was still going barefoot while wearning blue jeans/sweat pants.

Thanks Hannibal and Jeepcreep. I'm still trying to put this together. My factory closed down last Oct and I just got a new job in a hospital and I'm trying to play catch up. I gotta get some salt air though. It's been over a year. Thanks again. Ken

That’s my preferred time of year to fish the banks. As stated above, bring shorts and bare feet as well as fleece tights or long john's. Bring the chest waders too. No waders usually needed in the daytime but after the sun goes down you’ll be glad you have them. It can be sunny and in the 80’s or windy and in the 50’s, you won’t know until the day arrives. Water is usually in the lower 70’s and depending on the temp you can catch Pompano or you can be catching stripers. Temp can also vary greatly from north beach to south beach! Great time of the year for blowtoads, puppy drum and mullet. Of course the snapper blues are plentiful for anytime action. This is also just about the end of the finger mullet run so bring the cast net.

I’ll be in Buxton for 2 weeks starting October 24th, drop me a note if that’s your time slot and I can take you to a few places I always find productive and show you how to fish them. I’m not saying you don’t know how to fish but having fished up north for years, this is a little different down here.

I lost my information guy this year, he canceled his reservations due to being laid off. About 6 years ago I ran into the folks who rented the house the week before I do. He filled me in on what, when and where the fish were for the previous week. Since then, he was leaving me a note at the front desk. I do the same for the next folks who rent, never heard from them but I do it anyway.

9/15 is the last day for the 10 pm - 6 am driving restriction. 9/16 you will be able to stay drive on the beaches 24 hr.

As you know John but for Ken's information you need a nightime driving permit to drive on the beaches at night from 9/16 - 11/15. After 11/15 the permit is not necessary. They are available to download online or at the park. They are not available right now online but the NPS says they will be by 9/16.

Thanks for that info! I didn't know about the night permit. I've always gone around sunrise or sunset. Next trip will be my first night experience.

Thanks everyone for the information. Woody I might take you up on your offer. If I even make it I'll probably be in the Rodanthe area. Some other people are going to be there and we might be hooking up with them. Thanks for the information on the drive on Plug. I probably won't need it this time but I'm trying to make this a yearly thing and I would need it later on. Again thanks for the information. Ken

If you go and you have access to a 4wd take the time to ride out to Cape Hattersa Point in Buxton. It's less than a half hour from Rodanthe.

It's a unique place and ought to be seen.

October is the most beautiful month of the year on the OBX, days mid 70s nights mid 60s. Fishing is near its peak also.

Sounds like a good idea Plug. As far as I know the best I'm going to be able to do is my Toyota Rav4. Don't think it will be too good in the sand. If nothing else I could maybe sharpen up my camera skills too. I could be the next up and coming Allen Sklar. Thanks again.

I'll be in Nags Head last week of Sept, can't wait. The fishing at that time of the year is phenomenal.

Let the air out of the tires, and you will do as well as the others who drive them, with no problems.
