Default Anyone do any surf plugging in NC?

Aside from using spoons, mirrolures, and jig/gulp which seem to be the popular artificial choices in NC, does anyone use any techniques you see these northern guys use such as bucktails, bombers, pencil poppers, dannys etc? Plugging really intrigues me and I wonder if it's worth my time putting together a small surf bag and plugging away.

they used to do it at Oregon Inlet in Nov. and December for stripers. It was fun. Now that we do not have any more stripers --no so good

In late July and August, I still go out and throw big pencil poppers for Blacktip/Spinner Sharks. It's more to watch the expolsive strikes than to catch them. I remove the treble hooks and replace with a single J with the barb mushed down, so it is easier to remove if I do get them to the beach. Or for them to throw the hook during the fight. But other than that, No I don't think many people do surf plugging in that North East style.

I've caught bluefish tossing a "bluefish bomb" and bucktails should work as well as jigs at times. I also have had the same question and though I often go with the intention of trying new lures or techniques, I too often fall back into the old tried and true methods.

more like metal flinging with spoons. mirrolures are used for winter trout

I use swimmers late fall and winter for stripers in the surf around the inlets. I had a couple big blues hit a gibbs polaris popper (my favorite surf popping plug) sightcasting from the beach at Ocracoke Inlet in May. So, yes, its worth it IF the big fish are there. Otherwise, the tried and true stingsilvers, mirrolures, and soft plastics are tried and true for a reason

I guess it wouldn't hurt to put a small plug bag together. Besides, all the more reason to buy more stuff
