Pompano and sea mullet are biting now. Big pompano were showing up this past weekend. Won't need the heavy tackle you do in the spring and fall unless you go looking for a cobia and there still are some puppy drum around. Flounder are around too. Spinning rods and Gulps will work well in the surf and the sound for them. You didn't say where you were going to be on Hatteras. Beach access all along the island but so much now is governed by the bird closures. Best bet is to stop at the local tackle shops for advice and current information on beach access. Normally good kayak fishing on the sound side but I can't help you much there. My time is spent on the beach. Good luck. Enjoy your trip.

Pompano are some of finest eating fish out there. The tackle shops all have pre-rigged sets ups with smaller hooks. Use shirmp or sand fleas.
