Default Crack/Luxor reels

I recently got 2 crack/luxor 200 spinners. Question- every time i get one of these there is mono on it. Do these reels handle braid well???

Better off with mono if you're gonna fish them. Braid has a nasty tendency to get up under the drag nut.

Hey Mike,
I love these reels too ... See no reason why they wouldn't handle braid. Metal spools with anodizing should be fine ... drag is a question (single felt disc). I have converted a few to Smooth Drags but had to machine the bottom of the drag surface to accept the thicker washer.

Fill the reel with mono as backing to cut the braid cost ... they would probably hold a mile of braid.

Mono does too--so I'd expect braid to be about 3 times as bad.

Thx for the info. As you can see i have my crack 200 spooled with blue berkeley big game mono 20lb. I have about 5 crack/luxor reels and all of them came to me with mono on them . Now i thought maybe they are old and braid wasnt used then but i knew there was more to the story as a lot of surf guys still use em. I am def going to use the crack 200 off my boat and surf. Classic combo- 7'4 Kunnan competitor spin rod 25lb class rod with a Crack 200. I also have a 30lb class Sabre spin rod custom wrapped for the luxor 200. Ah i dont know what it is, i just like older reels. Dont use Cabos or new Penns or VS reels. Now this Crack 300 is HUGE! i mean bigger then a 706. What the hell can you use that for? chunkin? i have an 11ft lami that might match up well.

Little boys shouldn't play with daddys toys, Yes the 300 is huge and is great for chunking but it's a great plugging reel and has been for over 50 years, that alone tells you what you have and the finish on them 300s is like salt waters worst nightmare, can't hurt it, just wash it after you use it.

My Dad and I fished those reels in the canal for years. Their only Achillies heel was the drag. Yup, there was a drag knob sitting there atop of the spool. But for us it was pretty much a toggle switch. On/off.
It seemed we were always trying to fashion home made washers in an effort to improve their efficacy? But they never worked.

Years ago a guy gave me a unused shoe-sole, punshed out dragwashers from it, kept them well oiled and they worked great.Wish I still had one, shoe sole that is. Gave half the guys at MKT one back around 1978.

I added some teflon washers to the Luxor no3L and boy did it make a difference. The drag on the reel is very strong now. Does anyone know what the size differnce is on the luxor A or 1 the smaller one vs a VS100??

Default Manual Pick-Up

Here is a 3LA that I made a Stainless Manual Pick-Up for. I also used a thicker grease to combat the momentum of the rotor cup ....

NYtugs ... Sweet machining ... reel is in excellent shape too ...

WOW!! nice reels. Now i know i have to send my Crack 300 to apexkeeper to drill out the VS style rotor cup.

Smellfish- where did you get the manual bail from? I have my 3LA bailess too but have the original part left there. Yours looks better. Penn 69-704 manual bail work?
