Try Mapquest on Internet, ask for "directions", and you will know immediately.

You can take 64 across from Williamston or 264 across from Washington to Manteo. You can also take 24 east out of Jacksonville to Morehead and 70on to Cedar Island and take the ferry from Cedar Island to Ocrakoke.

It is 2 hours from MB to Jacksonville. 2.25 hours from Jacksonville to Williamston and app. 1.5 hours from Williamston to Manteo. 1.25 hrs from Manteo to Hatteras

Jacksonville to Cedar Island 2 hrs. Cedar Island to Hatteras(including two ferries) 3.5hrs

I've made the trip from Myrtle Beach to Hatteras by land and by sea. It is definitely a longer time by Cedar Island to Ocracoke to Hatteras Ferry --- but a much more pleasant trip if time is not an issue. Drive one way, ferry/drive the other way. You won't regret the ferry trip. Cedra island is probably 120-150 minutes north of Wilmington and the ferry ride is approximately two hours. The trip accross Ocracoke is 20 minutes and the Ocracoke -Hatteras Ferry in only about 25 minutes.
It just seems to me that the same trip by land is brutal.
