Hi, I'm new here and just happened to stumble upon this site in my search for my dad's Christmas present. (I already posted on the main forum, but someone suggested that I post this here.) My mom told me to get him a saltwater rod and reel but I have no idea where to start! He evidently wants to fish off a pier and also from the surf at the beach (Oak Island, NC). Can one rod accomplish this? I want to try to keep the spending limit under $100 so I can buy him some tackle to go with it. He used to fish but hasn't in probably 30 years, so novice equipment would be best. Could someone PLEASE help me???!!! Thanks!

Santagirl,
If you live in Oak Island I would recommend that you give your dad a gift card to BassPro. He can then buy what he wants out of the catalog, online of go to the store in Myrtle Beach. You might even take him there yourself. You and your mom could take him there and eat there or at any of the great restaurants in Myrtle Beach. Feel free to PM me or email me if you have any questions. I live about an hour north of Wilmington near Swansboro. |

Thanks for the recommendation. I live in Atlanta and they have a vacation home on Oak Island. However, there is a BassPro near their home. I think I will just go with the gift certificate. Trying to figure all of this out makes my brain hurt!

I agree about the gift cards. I have a herd of neices and nephews, most of them are old enough to know what they want. (But I don't.) So I've been doing gift cards for them for the past couple of years. It makes them happy, and it makes it easy for me.

May I suggest a GC to a local Bait and Tackle shop. May be a better bet to have someone with local experince guide your Dad. Plus it never hurts to support the locals. Just my 2 Cents

what kind of fishing does he like?
Does he fish for trout/flounder or bottomfish for spot/sea mullet? Does he have a boat or does he fish off the pier or surf? can't go wrong with a tica. $70 okuma makes a few good reels around 30-40 (Stinson,Avenger) |
