Default Maiden Kayak Trip in the Sound

Launched my new to me kayak today in the sound. Went out for 2 hours while the woman cooked dinner. The boat is a stripped down red fish 12'. I took two freshwater ultralights since I don't have a kayak rod. My first cast ever in my new yak produced my first ever puppy drum and my third cast produced a nice spot. Both fish swam away happy. I missed several others then headed home as it got dark. If anyone else fishes in a kayak in the area I would love to meet up.

We'll be down in mid December, both of our yaks with us looking for conditions to be right to find a striper or two oceanside. If not, surf fishing will do

I'll be down with our fly fishing club, Oct 24-28. if you want to join us. We have around 20 members participating and will be staying at milepost 17.5 and 18.

We'll be bringing several boats and a number of kayaks and hope to fish Manns harbor, Wanchese, Bodie, Prop Slough, Green Island Slough, New Inlet, Canada Hole. A couple of the guys who have their captains license will be heading offshore if conditions permit.

The last time we held this event we encountered a major blues blitz surfside and caught over 180 blues and one albie chasing the birds from Oregon Inlet Bridge to Rodanthe. My bro-in-law who got his captains license several years ago took a couple of our members out to the Gulf Stream and caught tuna, etc and we had sashimi that weekend!

Hopefully the bite will be on!

Thanks for the wonderful invitations I will make it a point to make an appearance. I will be fishing everyday until you guys show up so hopefully I can help make your clubs trip productive. I love surf fishing but after yesterday I got bit by the kayak bug. I am going to fish the surf fro the yak as well but I need a little more practice to get my strength up.

Default ...ability here from nh...

I sent you a pm back several months ago when you said you were heading down. When I am down there I stay at the rodanthe KOA, i have put in at the salvo sound side ramp /channel/dock area. There are channel markers that are lit that go several miles out into pamlico. At night we would paddle from marker to marker eventually making it out several miles to the point of barely seeing the lights of the beech. Casting all the way of course. If you go on a new moon night cloudless, you will be blown away, somewhat unnerving to be that far out so go with someone else, but easy just paddle to the next blinking bouy. I haven't been down since 2004 and miss it tremendously, I sure could use a vacation. Its good to see someone making a balsy move.

Sounds like a lot of fun. The only thing that I would be worried about is getting run over by a mullet boat.

Just be glad you caught fish and took the skunk off the boat/yak. To me as a superstitious fisherman, that would be the most important thing for me.

I had another excellent day in the sound today. Four fluke and a nice big spot who I threw in the back of the boat to have for fish taco lunch tomorrow but after 5 mins I heard some flopping and a splash. Thats what I get for planning my meal during the paddle back in. I'm looking forward to my girlfriend starting work so i can spend more than an hour or two out there.

I only saw two boats today. They drive real fast in that shallow water.

Ability, I remember the message, I don't know how anyone leaves here after vacationing here. It's unreal. I'm never leaving. I'll wait to do the moon light paddle until you show up.

Since my hands are getting blistered I think I am gonna give it a go in the surf looking for the big boys.

I forgot it was a holiday week end. The beaches are too crowded so I heading back out in the yak. This time I have trout retaining devices.

Too funny.

My folks told me to set up shop and they would be down in a few years. Hopefully just in time for us to be ready to have kids. I would have to assume dropping the kids off with grampy and grammy is a guilt free way to go fishing.

Probably mullet boats. They have to drive fast to keep the flat bottom boat on a plane or else they run aground. On a plane, they can run in a couple feet of water.

Hey...I live in the area. Bought a home in Nags Head a year ago, last week.

I don't know anybody but fish and hunt on my own, mostly.
Thanks for posting. Let me know what's up.
I have a friend that just moved to Manteo with a boat, but he has a new baby and his time out will be limited.
Maybe we'll bump into each other some time...have fun.
