I am visiting the OBX again in October 18. Last time there in May we stayed in Rodanthe, and I think at ramp 23 (perhaps someone could confirm that ramp number) we got into some monster blues, along with flounder, mullet, and small sharks.
Years previous we would often drive on just north of Oregon Inlet and fish the surf side nearest the inlet bridge with fair success. We didn't do this in May because it was closed to ORV driving. I hear both areas are open to driving now, and I was wondering where I might have better luck around this time. I know weather and water temps will play a big role, but I am hoping to get into a drum or a speck (even pups because I have never caught either). So any input would be appreciated. And also, what's the most reliable tackle store for current reports or closing in the OI to Rodanthe area? Thanks all! Matt in Salisbury, MD |

Ramp 23 is just north of Rodanthe. Ramp 27 is just south of Rodanthe. There is also two more ramps prior to reaching Avon....ramp 30 and 34.

Both ramps 23 and 27 are south of Rodanthe. I fish both quite a bit. You are coming at a good time to catch some fish. Just about anywhere on the beach can be a good spot this time of year. Ride the beach at low tide and look for the holes or breaks in the outer bar. Good luck.

for the info guys. Does anyone care to give their opinion as to where might be the better location? Also, what's a good spot to catch some mullet with a cast net on the sound side?

Talk to Jimmy at Hatteras Jacks he'll steer you in the right direction. Try the south end of Bonner bridge, sound side, for finger mullet. I would walk along the shoreline to the left of the rock jetty and when you get to a small sandy beach wade out about 20-25 feet and you should see finger mullet. I'd also fish the edge of the Green Slough which can be very productive with live bait. You can catch any inshore fish in the Green slough. Just be careful when you're wading and look for steep drop-offs which is usually indicated by darker water.

definitely the south end of the bonner bridge sound side. Usually can see pods of mullet in all different sizes there. Also had good luck at any of the sound side pull offs that you find along rt 12. especially towards avon and below

All of the Ramps between Rodanthe & Avon are great spots.
I have found that the sand is tricky at 30, so be sure to air down! All of the shops down there are great, my personal favorite is Frank & Fran's. You could travel more to the south and fish the point. If you fish the ramp just south of Avon, #38, beware! I got stuck like never before on that soft sand. Had to take it down to 10psi, and dig for a while. As far as finger mulet, anywhere on the sound side is IMHO a good place to cast a net. Good Luck and have fun!
