Thumbs down

How sad.

The enviro-nazis want to close down the whole place, and the locals want to keep it open and managed like is has been the last 50 years.

There will be no compromise. Why should the locals want to give away any of the access that they had for the last 50 years (and with no adverse affects to the wildlife) ? And why would the enviro-nazis ever negotiate for less than what they have already sued for and received in the consent decree.

What a waste of time.

I respect the Nature Conservancy for calling a spade a spade and withdrawing.

IMO, ultimately the bureaucrats who are in bed with the enviro-nazis, and also have the least knowledge of the area it's culture and it's ecology will call the shots.

Good luck Access supporters,
Steve

it is sad
but in all honesty we (the access supporters , fishermen) have been compromising for years ...
i wasn't there for it but i've been told at one time you could drive from one end of the island to the other ..
so we lost pea island access
lost access in front of the villages for the summer
lost access in front of hatteras all year ..
then we lost parts of south beach for the birds
then the point
north beach ...
and we won't compromise ??
personally , lets go back to the beginning ..
full beach access !!
and then start talking !!
everything that has ever been given away has never been enough !!
OPEN BEACHES FROM INLET TO INLET!!!

the goal is simple.......no people allowed.

This just shows how long this fight will be.

Remember we are fighting for acess to fish. Many locals are fighting for the right to make a living.

Default NC Wildlife Commission states position on Cape Hatteras Negotiated Rulemaking Meeting

Appears the faxes and turmoil may have done some good:

RALEIGH, N.C. (Sept. 16, 2008) – The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission supports opening negotiated rulemaking (Reg-Neg) committee meetings to a broader segment of the public through cable television and Internet broadcasts.

The Reg-Neg was established by the National Park Service to facilitate a negotiated rulemaking process for off-road vehicle (ORV) driving on Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

“Science-based decision making is fundamental to sound resource management, but those decisions must also take into account culture, tradition, economic impacts and public trust rights” said Gordon Myers, executive director of the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. “The Reg-Neg committee is composed of a broad set of interest groups affected by the ORV vehicle regulations. Synthesis of all perspectives and strict adherence to the meeting ground rules will result in the most sustainable long-term policy. Implementation of broadcast technology would provide another option for the public to overcome geographic separation in order to stay informed and participate in the rulemaking process.”

At the onset of the negotiated rulemaking process, Reg-Neg committee members agreed that public participation and process documentation would be facilitated through public meetings and a Web site repository. Information can be downloaded at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/projectH....org/hatteras.

Sound like there is still a lot of work to be done.
