Default Dec/Jan OBX Fishing?

Hi,all.I'm from RI,and normally fish with plugs for bass.My parents moved to Myrtle beach,SC,a few years ago,and they love the outer banks.Anyway, they want to rent a beach-house on the Outer Banks around Christmas,or New years,so we can all get together for the Holidays.
Obviously,I'm wondering what my opportunities for fishing will be?
I guess a lot depends on the temps, both up here, and down there.
I've never caught a drum, and would love to,but am I correct in assuming this is the wrong time of year?
Should I bring big conventional stuff for 8nBait?Will plugs catch?I don't flyfish, but I've got light gear for Hickory Shad and such, any reason to bring it?
Thanks in advance for any replies/advice.Bobby.

sadly i think our days of big stripers blitzes are behind us. Shrinking bio mass and mild winters ain't helping us out. I really really hope i am wrong.

Could be some big bluefish--lots of the last winter but they stay in deep water for the most part--the year before was pretty good. Really mild weather should be speckled trout in the sloughs on Hatteras Island.

The farmer's almanac is calling for a colder than average fall and winter this year so hopefully that will help things out.

I agree, I think the stripers blitzes we had for a coupl eyears are just a memory now......god they were fun. But like I said many times on the beaches during them, you cant keep so many fish and expect them to always be around.

the water should be cooler than the big drum like at that time, but they are nearby and if conditions are right it's not out of the question.

stripers are hit or miss, depends if the big schools stop at oi like the last few years or not. sometimes it is really good then. 8nbait is good, metal and lures are ok too in the right spot or if you get lucky and find a working school.
