Default Advice about Portsmouth Island Fishing

Heading down to PI Oct. 8th - 12th. There will be a group of 4 or 5 of us and we are all 1st timers on the island. Hoping to get a last minute report from Morris Marina before we head over but is the fishing typically better on the north or south end of the island?

We were hoping to setup camp and fish the beach near camp all week.. Is this a good plan or do most folks move around to locate the fish?

Bait? can you typically catch bait n the surf this time of year or is there a good spot on the sound side where we can net some bait? We plan on picking up some starter bait from the marina or one of the fish houses but would much rather catch some fresh.

Drum Rigs, Fish Finders, Jig Heads tipped with Grubs and some gotchas plugs are packed and ready to go.. any other rigs might want to try?

Any info would be appreciated

Shane

FishingPal, will be going over on Oct 11,for 8 days. Usually hang loose were to fish, sometimes the south end is best, almost always has finger mullet to net, which is what bait we use most, but always take some shrimp and squid, also some bloods. Use drum rigs and double hook rigs for the most part, also an inline sinker rig for flounder. Most of the time we end up on the north end or somewhere on the way up. The area in front of the cabins at times has been great. AIBill

BillyG - When you get there on the 11th look for a couple of Nissan Titan Crew cabs.. One white and one grey.. stop by and say hello if you see us and we will let you know how we have been doing..

I hope these Hurricanes get through here in Sept and leave us October fisherman with some good fishing..

Default Sinkers?

I just went through my inventory of sinkers and have plenty up through 5 oz. Is there a need for 6 - 8 oz. weights?

I have fished Cape Point over the years and know that if you don't have 8 and bait on there you can get out there far enough and hold the bottom. Wasn't sure if there was a similar need on this stretch of beach.

Derf - I will certainly keep an eye out for you while there. That is a sweet setup you have.

There is a reason the Misquito is the unofficial state bird.
