for spanish mackerel, a bare hook is better than cut bait. use lures such as x raps, sting silver(favorite), hopkins shorty, deadly dicks, got-cha plug(hard to workn the surf, have to work it fast, but produces), diamond jigs, live shrimp or mullet under a cork(not likely to hook a spanish from the surf though, need the distance), jighead and grub(seen spansih bite, but usually used for trout), clarkspoons(iyou can figure to cast it far somehow), and tins they use in the northeast with a thin profile will work. i am sure a robert ranger peppy lure and creek chub striper strike will work when they are breaking on top(not done this myself but seen it work). as for rigs, use heavy mono or fluro, or makcerel tree rigs off piers. a mackerel tree rig is a 4 or mroe hook rig with brighting tied mylared hooks, or tubing, or soda straw jigged with a diamond jig or sinker on the bottom from piers. can catch plenty of spanish or blues when you get a lucky spot on a pier and schooling fish, i have seen 6 blues on a rig of 12 hooks at once(use a cheap heavy durable rod at least 9 foot long for 12 hook rigs like ugly stick or bps power plus, or diwa beefstick). for working got-cha plugs off pier, follow the veterans. hold ur rod low and jerk and reelin the slack very quickly(you want the lure right around 1 to 4 foot from the surface). make sure the line is not wrapped around the guid at the tip or else it may cut the line as spnaish mackerel fight at least 2 times harder than a bluefish of the same size! you may want toi tied a rope to the rod, just in casee you accidently drop the rod while jigging or a school of 12 blues get themselves hooked!
hope this helps |
