Tica rod that will throw 6-10oz around $135.
Reel? 525 should be able to find on under $150. The finial setup will have more opions that there are in what type of truck is better. See if you can find some frineds that have some stuff and ask to try it out. I have a wheeler fusion custom that I paid $525 for and it has a coustomized Avet SX that I have spent around $225 total for. There are some out there that spend even more. |

Why skimp on the bucks?
Cheap won't get there, or last long. Dawia Balistics are the rods, knock down to 3 pieces and get major distance. The reels are another choice, mag or brakes to start. Cost around $650 to do it right.

There is no best.
Only what's best for you. Yes, the Ballistic is nice. It's not for me, but I know some guys who can flat out smoke that rod. At 13 years old, you're going to have to find out what type or rod you like. Something with a stiff tip? One with a soft tip? Something you can hold all day? One that you'll be spiking or leaning on a rail most of the time? Something that can can handle 10oz and a big bait? One that tops out at 6 or 7 ounces? What's your price range? If you're looking at staying under $200, the Tica Derf suggested is a good one. If you have a strong cast, that rod gets bogged down with 8oz. If you want a rod that will handle more weight, look at the Ocean Master 12'. That rod is heaver and harder to load than the Tica, but that's why it'll handle more weight. Looking for pure distance rod that won't break the bank? The Breakaway HDX is a good bet. Just be warned that the guides and seat are cheap and the walls of the blank are thin. You'll have to be careful, because those rods will break easier than some of the others. Looking for light rod with a sweet spot around 6oz? The Loomis 1448, the Lami 1502 and the WRI 7-Dust are all worth checking out. Looking for the "best" rod 8oz and bait? You have many to choose from. WRI rods are my favorite because they fit my casting style. You've got AFAW, Daiwa and even some English blanks. All shine in some areas, and it just depends on what you're looking for. I'm sure I forgot to mention a few rods. If you live on the Outer Banks, go speak with the guys at TWs, Hatteras Jack, RDT, Frank and Frans, ect. They'll let you handle ... and maybe even cast ... most of the top selling rods down your way.

The tica will still be a good back-up. I still use one when I spike out multiple rods. It'll throw. IMO it is the perfect first heaver for a 13 year old. This fish was caught last week on the tica 6-12, a daiwa shv-20 and 17# line.
