Default Cobia from the sand in August?

I'll be in Duck next week and wanted to do some night fishing from the beach. Can you catch cobia from the beach this time of year? How bout sharks? I know anyhting is possible, but I'm looking to set my expectations versus reality. Also, any advice as to hook size and type of bait? Thanks.

Don't get your hopes up for cobia from the surf in Duck. It would be the first one ever that I know of. There are still a few cobia around, but mostly caught by inshore boats.

They've been landing them in Sandbridge, so there's no reason why you can't land them in Carova/Corolla/Duck.

Use a 10/0 J hook.

Try clipping the tail of a spot or bluefish and toss it out as far as you can. Then put a smaller spot head and sling that over the bar with a second rod.

Big bait in close and a smaller head out far.

Don't let the rays get you down. Yer gonna have to fish through them to land a cobie.

If you're going to fish through all the rays bring PLENTY of tackle...

I was in Corolla a week ago and we hit the surf really well for a change. Every day from about 6PM to dark, we hit a blitz of bluefish like I never saw. All were no bigger than a few lbs, but we caught more than a hundred fish each day on spoons and bucktails. It was pretty cool. The rest of the day, we caught small flounder on minnows in the surf and plenty of kingfish on fresh shrimp
