Default a question about the pulley rig...

Hey everyone! Whats goin' down? 1st post here...

Im a noob to shark fishing, but Im gonna give it a shot when I get down this week. Im checking out the pulley rig, but there is something Im not making a connection with. Following the instructions at http://home.earthlink.net/~biters/pullyrig.htm (read he has passed... RIP) I am lost with what the purpose is with the clipdown\breakaway clip. What is its purpose? Why will I be taping the "clipdown" along the leader? Could someone school me on this, please? Man, that would be great...

Thanks!

I don't use them, but here is what I think I'm seeing:

The breakaway/clipdown clip is designed to hold your bait as you cast...basically allowing you to cast a ten foot leader as if it was a five foot leader. Consider the 'sliding swivel' to be the "fulcrum" while the bait and sinker are weights...on either end of the leader which feeds through the sliding swivel. The inverted clipped J-hook (which is taped to hold it in the inverted position) is used to clip your bait hook onto...or hang it there. Remember, the sinker should weigh more than the bait...the weight will pull the leader through the 'sliding swivel' (marked '6' on the pic), which in turn will pull up on the bait hook holding it in the clipdown clip.

Is that understandable??? The clip allows you to fold your leader in half, once it hits the water or rests on bottom, it should freely fall free from the clip. Then as a shark eats it, the leader will slip through the swivel until it bottoms out at the sinker. That is....if I'm reading this correctly.

Hopefully our two heads together has figured this out.

Ah, I see now. It makes total sense. That's a pretty neat little system. Thanks a lot, Eric!!!
