We went for a week a couple of years ago. the beach was flat and not very conducive to fish. We spent our time on the peir south of town. Don't remember the name.
They were catching King Macks and shark. The day trippers were left with the middle span of the boards and there were schools of spot for as far as you can see. I am no fan of pin fish but that was all we were able to get. You don't want to crowed the REGULARS as they have all ther gear and the prime spots nailed down. My BIL went on a head boat for 1/2 a day and came home with one small sea bass and that was all the boat got for 5 hours.

Not schools of spot....you wouldn't see them....they hang on the bottom and if they were there, you would have caught them one after the other. Had to be something else.
Pier fishing can be fun. There should be some sea mullet, occasional pompano, smallish bluefish, flounder, maybe a spot here and there....somewhere around. Use light/medium spinning outfit...12-15lb line...two hook bottom rig set up with #4 snelled hooks...two oz sinker. Peel shrimp and cut into 1/4in long pieces for bait. You can also bounce a live minnow around the pier piles on the bottom...flounder. Also keep a medium weight rig ready with some metal of some sort...preferably as small as is castable...for spanish macks if you see some moving through. Never had luck in Myrtle myself. |

Your up on the planks looking down in the water and here comes this 15 to 20 foot dark spot of schooling fish.
Thats what we had for 6 days school after school of Pin Fish (SPOT)

Sorry for being a dumbazz....but I've never seen pin fish school like that either. Spot tail pinfish I've seen school, but that's offshore around towers. Not to say it ain't the same, just never seen it. If you say so....so be it. The bunker will come through schooled up like that as well.
Either way...we'll classify them as "junk fish"...as we wouldn't eat either pinfish or bunker. I suppose it coulda been spot if the water was super clear enough to see bottom. If so, you shoulda filled the cooler...not many things better than spot. Others woulda been filling coolers with them and it would have been shoulder to shoulder fishing if the spots were running...normally in the fall...and it's like combat fishing on the pier. Good luck!!!! |

I was in Myrtle Beach two weeks ago and brought my kayak down from NJ. The only action at all was from sharks about 1/2-1 mile from the beach. I would just use a small piece of shrimp on a light rod to catch spots or croakers and then put them on a larger rod with a big hook with wire. Just drift and hold on! I caught about 15 sharks with the biggest being about 6 feet.
This was the first time I was there when there were no big schools of bunker around. Like you said, when you see a 50 foot black circle coming towards you, just throw a snag hook out and you could have all the bait you need. And usually there were plenty of sharks through-out the school. |

Try sandfleas if you can find them or shrimp. Fishing has been slow recently. Drive south to the Garden City area and you might have better luck in the surf or on the pier. Caught a few good size pompano there a couple weeks ago.
