Default Shark Fishing Rod/Reel Combos

Would either of the rod/reel combos listed here be okay for light tackle shark fishing (sharks up to say, 100lbs)? Has anyone used either and would you have a preference?

Penn 113/114

Penn 330 GTI

Offshore Angler/Ocean Master

Offshore Angler/Captain's Choice

I don't do that type of fishing all that much so not looking to break the bank on a combo that I would not be using all that much. I know there are better models to be had but just looking for something basic.

Thanks in advance for any info.
please read the 'guidelines and help at the top of the forum , esp the part on posting links . derf

all of them would work but if i had to choose between one of those i would go with the 330, except with the regular slammer rod w/o roller guides.

where are you going to be fishing with this setup? (pier, boat, etc.)

Default Boat, Maybe Surf too?

I have shark fished near shore by boat but was gonna try some yak shark fishing from the beach too... I was thinking the same thing about not wanting the rollers. Thanks for your advice. Any suggestions as to where to go for surf sharking (anywhere but the point)? I am probably staying near Rodanthe.

I think I have read that a couple DelMarVa surf sharkers use the Ocean Master 12' conventional heaver with a Penn 113 Senator. That should be a strong set-up to handle most beasts. Of course, that isn't very castable, so it would involve yakking baits out.

he said he doesn't want a "bank buster" combo since he won't be using it that much....that setup would be between like $200-215. not sure how much the other setups are but that's a lot of money to spend if you're only going to use it every now and then....it'd be different if he was using it like once or twice a week.

do you know where the boiler is?, its halfway between oregan inlet and rhodanthe, its a sunkin ship about 250-300yds offshore never fished there but it could be a good spot. and i'm always hearin' bout blacktips and small hammerheads further south off the peirs.

I was simply commenting on those rod/reel models since he mentioned them specifically in his first post above. He didn't specify a budget, but he did ask specifically about those models.

If you are going to cast baits you may be better off with the Penn 555 on an OM heaver, I have 2 of them and they make a good combo.

4/0 good reel but to big for the surf a lot easier to cast on shorter rods.

the 330GTi i would say yes, but its a levelwind and there are usually plastic gears in levelwind reels

i've got a jigmaster (caught plenty of 100lb + fish on it), its about the same size as the GTi but cheaper and no levelwind

Offshore Angler/Ocean Master, never used'em

Offshore Angler/Captain's Choice, never used'em

The smallest reel we use for yak em out baits is a 6/0 wide, mostly we use 9/0's and 12/0's. If on a budget I would watch the boards for used equipment.
