Default Hatteras surf fishing during June-early July

Hello, I'm hoping you can help me? I will be in Hatteras during the end of June and early July. What would be the best tackle for surf fishing during that period? What weight lures are best? Thanks in advance.

Arrow

Fresh cut mullet on a fish finder rig is what I use for the bigger fish.. The weight 4oz-10oz according to the current.. Or try gold or silver hopkins, (spoon) cast and retreave for blues..Hope this helps..PEEWEE..

Late June you are the VERY tail end of cobia season...depends on wind, water temp, and water clarity....other than that, for big fish you are looking at sharks or rays.

Top water in the surf will be small bluefish and Spanish Macs......a sting Silver or other metal retrived quickly will get you those in clear water. And sometimes ribbonfish and/or houndfish run with the Spanish.

The rest is all small bottom fish......croakers, spot, maybe sea mullet, maybe some pompano, an occasion summer flounder. You want light gear, small hooks, and weights of about an ounce, maybe two in rougher surf. And fish right in the trough at the bottom of the berm with worms, sandfleas, squid, or shrimp.

On the back side (sound) you can find speckeld trout, bluefish, flounder, and occasionally a puppy drum. Last year I even managed a striper, which surprised me, as in 20 years of going down there in late June/early July, that was the first time I caught a bass down there.

Again, you are looking at light gear with 3/8 - 1/2 ounce jigheads with curly tail plastics, or small Hopkins or such. Some guys cast net bait fish and use them live for flounder.

Also in the sound on the bottom, you can catch all the tiny pinfish you could ever want on bait, but that gets pretty old pretty fast.

I will be down there (Avon) the last two weeks of June, and if you're real nice to me , maybe we can get together and I'll share a good soundside spot with you.....

Hey Steve:

Well I'm going down on June 28-July 4th. Thanks for all the information. I'm trying to collect all the information that I can as I'm a beginner at surf fishing. I used to live down in Nags Head many years ago but never did any surf fishing. I've heard every bait known to man to use and weights from 3/8oz.-10oz......so I'm getting confused. So I guess I'm going to have a full tackle box for sure. .........thanks again for all the great information.
