First off let me say good luck with your battle for access down there!! Sorry to bother you guys cause I know you have alot going on right now. But I will be staying in Salvo from 4/18-4/27 have relatives in Ocrakoke. I know I can stop at Bass pro on the way down but I would like to buy a rod from a local shop. Can I get a rod at a reasonable price down there? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Also I am a Maine guide and a charter captain and was wondering if anyone with local knowledge would be interested in tradeing trip for trip? Surf or boat. Thanks for your time and any info. at all would be greatly appreciated!!!

For rod, I would recommend Red Drum in Buxton. Better yet, call ahead and get them to make you a custom in time to pick up when you arrive. Great service, nice selection, and perfect location for fishing Hatteras.

Yeah, Red Drum can do you up nicely.
There's a place in Salvo, the Fishing Hole (I think) it is oceanside of Rt. 12, and they have a pretty nice selection...don't know if they do custom or if everything is off the Rack. Frank and Fran's in Avon is another good choice. On behalf of us North Carolinians, we hope you enjoy your trip.

Lots of choices on your way down, TW's in KDH and Nagshead, Hatteras Jacks in Rodanthe, Frank and Frans in Avon, RDT and Dillions Corner in Buxton, Frisco Rod and Gun in Frisco, Pelicans Roost in Hatteras Village. Lots of choices and they will all be able to hook ya up with what ya need.

I have been in all of these but the Fishing Hole. For broadest selection by FAR and for a custom, I again recommend Red Drum.
Fran and Franks is great for personal service, for boots, bait, caps, and the like. Same for Frisco Rod and Gun. TW's is a big operation. but for custom rods already made or to order plus a great selection of factory rods, I would take Red Drum every time, and going there directly will save you a lot of scouting. I have no connection to Red Drum - other than owning two of their custom rods. |

well it seems i have edited one of my own post again .... before you buy any rod anywhere .... 1 ) make sure it just isn't an impulse buy 2) talk to the person who is building the rod for , don't just buy a rod that is sitting there 3) try as many different rods that you can 4) make sure it is built by a rod builder and not a rod wrapper ....
