Default Set up my terminal gear for sharks...

Ill be down in the Duck area the week of July 12th. My plans is to catch some small stuff during the day and use cut bait for sharks at night..

I have a Lami 136 1MH (good to throw 12 oz and a chunk) and a newell 344 (lo gear ratio). Up here I use 50 lb mono on this set up and never have an issue with big fish.. question is, how do I set up for BIGGER fish down there? I wouldnt get enough 50 lb mono on that thing for a big fish.

SHould I go with maybe 50 lb braid on the 344, with a top shot of 50 lb mo?

what about wire leader size/ length for sharking?

Hook Size (are 8/0 -9/0 stainless Siwash hooks ok?

Any help would be appreciated..

thanks,
BC

B C, please use a circle hook. It does matter, you do want to release the bigun after the fight, right? Any of the big Owner, Mustad, or Gamakatsu will work just fine.

Ive got some 15/0 Mustad circles I could use, we'll see.. I dont often belly hook fish.. secondly, I cant see myself as a rookie getting close enough by myself at night to a big shark to pull circle hook outta the corner of its mouth.. If I land a shark, chances are, the leader is getting cut as close to the fish's mouth as possible and its going back in the drink..

those hooks rust out pretty quickly, so no problems..

i do that same kind of fishing up here in jersey i would use 80 lb braid you will get a lot more line than 50 lb mono. to tell you the truth i put 140 pp on my set ups and put the drag at 35 lb of pressure, only beacause im fishing around docks so i lock them up. ive had fish to 200 lb no problem.

440 yards of 30 would be about perfect for any shark that can be caught on a heaver... IMHO
