Question short snells

I know some of you OBX guys use a very short leader from swivel to hook (couple inches). The hook & bait ends up next to the weight allowing for a much further cast. I've tested this sort of setup a little bit in the relatively calm waters off of MA but I'd like to try it in the rougher CA surf. Do you guys ever worry about the bait getting burried in the sand on such a short leader?

Drum and cobia tend to root in the sand so its not really a issue.

I always pull my sinker out of the sand every 10 minutes or so.

I use the short snells when I fish the OBX (one week a year). MOst of the time the current keeps the bait moving emought ot prevent it from getting buried, but every once in a great while it does. Like NewsJeff said, just reel in a couple turns, and the problem goes away..

No trouble here. Bite leader is half an inch long.

This is the rig most of us use when it comes to striper & drum fishing 8/0 to 10/0 circle hook conected to 150# swivel with 2" to 3" of 80# to 100# mono

i've used this on ocation when i wanted my bait to drift with current 8/0 to 10/0 circle hook with 1 1/2' to 2' of 80# to 100# mono. thread a bead on the line then whatever size EGG WEIGHT you need then another bead then tie on a 150# swivel
this would be a good choice because it rarly gets covered up although it dosnt stay in one spot

Same here.

CS. I use the same set up except my pyramid weight mod is above
the swivel to avoid the lead sandwich. Course its anyones guess that
happens. Also the bonus is in reeling in. Feels like theres 1/2 the weight.
Helps out the old arm when spiking 4 or more rods and bait changing
constantly.

Great thread by the way.

I cut off the tip and drilled a hole through it. Then countersunk it
for the beads. I found out later it holds better in the ocean if the
weight is turned around.

Hi-speed metal. Once you get the drill spinnin' , don't stop.
It will seize up in the the lead from the heat. Hack off the eyelet
flush, cut off the tip, then start drilling from the bottom. Full blast right out the top. If I could modify a weight mold I'd pour the lead my self. But for now....a pain.

Tools: Saw, drill bits, hammer, vice, awl, course file.
