Can anyone recommend some areas in NC for me to research as a place to retire? I was gonna move out west but realized I can't be away from surf fishing. I'm looking to be real close to the beach in a good middle class area. Employment not really a concern. I hear Morehead City is a possibility. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

If employment is no issue and you want the best surfcasting on the east coast then you need to be between kitty hawk and buxton (the outer banks). The nearshore/offshore fishing is excellent if you are a boat owner. Housing prices are coming down (very affordable compared to LI)and it would be a good time to buy in the near future. Property taxes are still dirt cheap. We got a hospital in nags head about 3 yrs ago and there is now a 55+ community right over the bridge in currituck. I grew up on LI (I am 37) and have lived here for the last 8 yrs. Closest city/airport is norfolk, va about 1.5 hrs away. 10 hr drive back home if you need to go that route. The ocean striper fishery boom that was taking place for most of the last 10 yrs is about over imo so the winters might be a little slow.

NYPD? One of my buddies likes to rub it in how he is only 3 yrs from retirement at the age of 37. He deserves it. Congratulations.

Anywhere Nags Head and north or across the bridge on Roanoke Island, such as Manteo. We almost moved to Hatteras 10 years ago but decided to stay put...nice area, love the OB!

Check out Colington Harbour in KDH. It might still be affordable. If you go to that realtor **** place and look at 27948 it'll get you close. Decent trout fishing at the inlet to the harbour as well. Corolla south to Whalebone get swamped with tourons during the peak season, even going now as far south as waves, salvo, avon, etc...
My personal preference would be Buxton and south to Hatteras. Howling winds and dead in the winter, and if you need medical attention you're sort of on your own, just something to think about for the long haul. Chesapeake General is a long ride, and I doubt medical services have gotten a lot better since I left KDH in 1999. But Hatteras is a magical place. Never seen another place like it |

I've been back several times...liked it better in the old days.
Is it a real hospital? I compared it to hospitals here in MD, and it doesn't look like it has a lot of capabilities a larger scale hospital would have, hence my response that Chesapeake General is a long way off. Maybe I'm missing something. |

FrankG good for you, i'm guessing your only doing 20 and out. where i'm at 20 only gets you 50% and no bennys. unless you have somthing else lined up everyone by me does 25, that gets you bennys and 67%. maybe i should do a lat. transfer LOL
off that my son lives in mooresville NC more in land and west. good freshwater, lake norman and a punch of others. good luck jim |

Without a doubt. My department is a sinking ship plus with our salary I'll never be able to own a home here.
