Default east end OI

The east end of Oak Island is the old Fort Caswell. It was an active US Army (I think) post until WWII ended. The US Govt sold it in the late 40's and the NC Baptist association bought it for $86,000. It is about 250 acres, has dozens of buildings (77 when they bought it), and at today's prices is something like a 1.5 billion dollar asset.

They run retreats and camps there, with many children present, and that is why access is limited. You are allowed to drive through on certain days, but may not leave your vehicle without a permit.

As for the beach, I also assume you can walk the beach, since beaches in NC are public. But its a long walk and there is limited parking at the end of the road. I also do not know for sure if walking is allowed... who knows, they may have some way to outlaw it. You might try calling them and asking.

That whole beach along the east end of the island is uncrowded. I stay there and never see many people. There is only one road, along the beach, and only two rows of houses... ocean side, and sound side. So the traffic is low.

The inlet there is the mouth of the Cape Fear river. The big lighthouse at your back is Oak Island light. The little light house across the water is Old Baldy on Bald Head island.

They say the waters from the mouth of the river up inside to Southport and behind the island into the ICW are flounder and trout water, but I have not been able to fish there so I cant verify that.
