Default Mullet Gone?

Came in this morning...to NO mullet minnows. Managed to get one keeper flounder on a jig on the second cast, then broke off my jig on a hang. Just went out and managed to scratch out a couple dozen minnows for my lunch time fishing. Last week you could walk on the mullet....probably down in Myrtle Beach by now. Might have to fall back on the jig again.

Default mullet

Well here is a report from not quite Myrtle beach, but closer to it than Beaufort.

I was at Oak Island Sunday and the mullet were there, but not the thick river of fish that was there two weeks ago.

The schools showed up at tide change, and hung around for about an hour to an hour and a half. They were plentiful, but you still had to stand at the pier rail and wait for them to swim into range. But there were enough schools to keep 8 or 10 netters busy and not in each others way.

Before the mullet showed up there were huge schools of menhaden moving up and down the beach. They would swim to the pier, then turn and go north and eventually come back. Looked like darkj boiling clouds from 15 feet above them, pier height. A few blues were cutting through them. Very cool show.

As of last night, there still is a bunch in the sound. The next cold front should bring a bunch more out into the ocean......

I think this hot weather has em in the creeks....need a good "mullet blow" to get em moving again.

I did catch my limit of keeper flounder yesterday though under the docks, musta been hungry without any mullet minnows around. Total of about twenty fish to get an 8 fish limit...not big, but legal. My dad is eating good over the next few days! Drove them to him last night.
