We are headed to Nags Head next weekend for three days for our annual family trip. We usually take our surf gear and have had limited success in the past. We use fish finder rigs with #8 circles and whole mullet rigs. Bait is cob mullet and finger mullet. Are we doing things right or is there better set-ups we should be using? I would greately appreciate any advice.

I went last weekend to OBX and did fairly well on bluefish from the beach driving on near the Oregon Inlet Bridge. We were fishing for two days (maybe 10 hours total fishing) in 20-30 mph E/NE winds. Wind had the mullet all over the beach. We used fish finders, whole mullet rigs, and spot/kingfish rigs with FBBW (no spot or kingfish though). On the whole, we landed maybe 30 blues, 2 small black drum, and 4 giant rays. We did not catch any reds but we saw a few caught by the guys to our left (using the same setups with mullet). The bluefish bait of choice was whole mullet (cut mullet or bluefish in a pinch). The rays took the cut bluefish, mostly the heads. The black drum were caught on fishbites crab strips. The blues were mostly small and for much of the time we fished we were getting chomped off at the tail. Best of luck!
