Fish n' chips = dogfish n' taters in England. They are mostly using spiney dogfish, but I wouldn't think there's much of a difference between them and smooth doggies.

all sharks are edible except greenland shark(poisonious flesh) and taste decent, but often contain high levels of mercury

I used to live on LI and caught sand sharks near the outdoor theater by the Jones Beach obelisk. I fished from my father's boat. I always threw them back...they had no slime on them......a rough, sandpapery skin made them very easy to hold and remove the hook. Never ate one.

These are the type that im referring to. I was fishing west end on wednsday and landed two huge one's. They threw a big fight which completly tired me out. I realeased them, only after which i began to wonder if they are edible. thanks for the info all.

Biggest I ever caught was about 20 inches at the place mentioned. I NEVER saw a big one either. Biggest I saw caught was maybe 3 feet...........so I assumed that the species did not get any bigger than that...........I used frozen squid............from the supermarket for bait.

Smooth dogs taste different. I much prefer spiny.

I cooked one up last week - came out really nice, unique texture, mild but distinctive taste - good stuff

Caught a few big ones last week, actually 15 of them. They were all between 15 and 20lbs.

I always threw these things back as I had no use for them, I went home and found out the state record was only 19lbs. Wish I would have had the big ones weighed on a an official scale.

All within a 3 hour period, someone always had a fish on..sometimes we all did. Great fights, girls really enjoyed it!

If the state record is 0nly 19 #s, then the sand shark is a small species.
