Every time I am down on Hatteras Island I am wondering if there is any good shellfishing along the sound? Is this something I could look into doing, would I need a permit??

No permit necessary to get clams. And, the clam are available all year. The oysters are not however, only during the fall and winter. You do need a license to fish for finfish however. Call the NC Dept of Marine Fisheries or ask a local tackle shop about where you are planning to get clams...with rain, we get temporary closures of various areas.....AND.....some areas are permanently closed. There should be clams just about anywhere on the sound side. I can't express enough the importance of checking for closures...sickness or tickets can be a real hassle.
