My brother-in-law and I have decided to try hark fishing from the surf this year. Does anyone on here have any experience with this? I began some research, I think I have gear that will hold up to the challenge of a 4-6' shark. I plan on spoolin w/40lb braid, then a swivel to 100lb mono leader, to a shark rig. Bait will hopefully be caught during the day. Fishing time will be from 7-11 at night. Any additional info would be greatly appreciated.

You should have fairly good luck. We had an attack about twenty miles up the beach yesterday here at Atlantic Beach....took two bites on a lady swimming in waste deep water. So with that, we know they're there. This stretch of NC has one of the largest populations of coastal sharks.

Fish EI a couple time a year and about 4 ft is the biggest shark I caught. I have caught some big rays and they are lots of fun. All returned to fight again. Good luck. cut fresh bait was always best for me, even better then a small whole bait.

Thanks for all of the info everyone! But as far as a rig setup, am I headed in the right direction? I am hvaing doubts about being able to cast a 9-10' leader. I have only really done a 6' for stripers up here...

Can't help you. I used a fish finder with a 6" leader. I can't see how you could get any distance with that leader.
Maybe try a balloon with a off shore wind? Good Luck I know they get some sharks off the piers. |

Two people have now been bitten by sharks while swimming on Bogue Banks beaches this past week. One in Em Isle and the other at Ft Macon (like Eric said). Lots of sharks here.
What a lot of guys do that fish for sharks from the beach is to set up a 3/0 or something like that and swim or kayak the bait out past the breakers. You can sit on the Bogue Inlet pier and watch the blacktips/spinners jump out of the water. Somedays it is a pretty frequent occurrence.

I heard about the 14 year old, I did not hear/find about the one in E.I. Though. Do you have any detail on it? Oh, and I orderd the rigs from a guy in FL. I will post a link up later and if they are good and if anyone is interested, I can hook you up(no pun intended). They were very cheal $4.5o each.
