Default Plug fishing Hatteras...

Will be in NC this week for some tuna fishing, but was planning on spending a day doing some surf fishing.....Is there anything running right now that will hit plugs in the surf (cobia, reds, stripes), or is it a bait game right now? Thanks---Mike

hatteras is mainly a bait game ...
specs , blues , spanish macs are the basics for 'plugs ' there
specs , jig head and curly tail , mirro lures
blues , well ya know blues hit just about anything , but sting silvers work
spanish , sting silvers and the copies

cobes ,big reds = bait
stripers (not really around in the surf now ) might want to check out the manns harbour bridge ??

Has there been any reports of spanish mackerel around? I am on a mission to catch some when I am there in two weeks. What would be the best bet of getting some? Pier or inlet? Do they usually hang out further than surf casting? Morning, evening or day time? I'll be fishing as much as I can, and don't mind catching just about anything. Just really want to catch a few of these pretty looking fish. I hear they are tasty too.

Get to the surf early (Grey light) and throw a stingsilver and crank as fast as you can. Temps should be right from Oregon Inlet down to Oracoke. Still a little cool up around nags head for the spanish but that could change fast with the 3 days of east wind we are getting. Good luck !
