When you kayak baits out in June, is there anything to know? First off, would you use a fishfinder rig on the rods? I'm guessing it is as easy as getting it out there and dropping off. Will multiple lines most likely get tangled? Any tips? I have a month until I'm in Avon, can't wait.

What type of fish are you targeting when you kayak the bait out?
This is new to me. |

I tried it for the first time last year and was rewarded with a cobia. You have to pick your days and spots to be able to get out and back safely. A standard drum rig is what I used with extra weight over what I'd usually cast to make sure I held.
If you have others fishing nearby keep an eye on your course when you paddle out. Last thing you want to do is drop your bait across a dozen lines and then pull them in when you reel in. It is easy to do when you paddle out 400 yards. Make sure someone is watching your rod when you go out. I got bit 2x before I even made it back to the beach. Use big bait. A half or even a whole bunker isn't too big for these guys. Two baits way out could be asking for trouble if a school of rays come around. Reeling in one ray when you have 400 yards out isn't any fun so I would imagine two is some serious work. You could always just throw a second bait in close.I'm going to be down there that first full week of June if you want to stop by and say hello. I have a gray suburban with NJ tags. My wife, baby, and big old 150lb brown newfoundland will be in tow. Newsjeff will probably be around also. That is if he has finally learned how to turn a kayak back towards shore. ![]()

Thanks Mike,
I'll be down the same week. We have two little ones heading down with us as well. Just casting from the beach house area. Don't want to have to buy tags for the vehicle, and take it out once or twice. Was thinking to run baits out for a few of the others, then cast for spanish while I'm out there. But seeing that you had some action before even getting back, makes me want to get back before that. I'm doubting that I'd be going half as far though, since I doubt anyone will have more than 300 yards of line. Give atleast 100 yards of play... Definitely will only be going out if the waves aren't too big. |

But I'll have the whole A/C with me to keep me pointed in the right direction. Mike, I owe ya a few paddled out baits. I just hope the wind and current is weak around that hook.
