Don't forget small bluefish (perfect grilling or pan frying size) and Spanish mackeral in the surf on top, and perhaps some sea mullet on the bottom.....

Yeap, wasn't even thinking of that and it is a GREAT thing to do that time of yr.. Those pan sized bluefish are great, and spainish as well.. Fun to catch throwing a stingsilver, still kinda partial to pompano, but spainish and bluefish should be here in numbers that time of yr.. Could be a chance of a cobe as well,if water temps don't get to boiling point...

Default Here's a few guides I could recomend..

You can PM if you want the numbers.. All inshore guides,trout,flounder,bluefish,cobia,drum,ect..

Daryel Hendrix,Doug Martin,Rick Scarborough,Scott Cladwell.. All these are excellent Hatteras inshore guides.. For Ocracoke,I would recomend Norman Miller, great drum guide, and can put you on plenty of wreckfish as well.. Also Miss Hatteras is an excellent party boat, that catches plenty of bottomfish off the wrecks...

There is plenty to catch out of the surf with pompano, bluefish, and spainish as well.. Also soundside it's a good time to catch pups and trout.. Imo,would get a guide for a day on the sound, and surfish the rest of the time...

For pompano,go to any baitstore they have seastriker pompano rigs.. They have gold hooks and are pretied with swivels, all ya got to do is put a 1oz sinker on.. Buy some shrimp, and dig in the sand for sandfleas "molecrabs".. The soft ones work the best, but hard ones work as well..
For spainish, get some stingsilvers or one of the many look alikes that work well.. Ask anyone in these takle shops here, they'll give you a hand at picking what you need..

They are good, out of OI... I don't believe any of the guides that I mentioned have websites, but Teach's Lair Marina and Hatteras Harbor do,and should be able to hook you up with one of the ones mentioned..

Another hint......for the Spanish, tie your Stingsilver direct to the running line.....Spanish are spooked easily by swivels and snaps and such......yeah, there are bluefish around, but they are usually small enough that they won't cut you off......at least I've never had one cut me off in the Hatteras surf that time of year.....

And since Spanish are sight feeders, you need fairly clear water.....if you have a wind that is blowing sand in the water and clouding it up, you can cast forever right in front of the fish you see out there, and just get frustrated with no hits.........

And one last thing....though some may disagree with this.....Spanish are very, very fast swimmers, and I have always had the best luck reeling the StingSilver as fast as I can with a large spool reel......sometimes slowing down for a second or two will entice a hit, but mostly, they just nail the lure as it is flying along in the surf........ at least in my experience......

Thanks for the tip. Is it worth bringing the fly rod for the surf too?
