I have to admit I am really not much of a REAL surf fisherman. I fish from shore a fair amount but with 7' spinning gear since in my area there are plenty of fish are within 100' of shore. I will be in Hatteras for the first time in mid April with my family and would like get some fishing in. Am I wasting my time bringing 7' rods or can I expect to catch fish in the close surf?
Also, is there any light tackle action in the Sound in mid-April? It does not get much press but I thought it might be because of the great surf-side action. Thanks. |

there should be mullet and such in close for the 7' gear. you will be there during the prime of the durm season, but a big red will bust up a 7 footer quick. they are a long cast off shore anyway.

In short though,IMHO,you are undergunned.. Some girls caught some nice ones down here last week,up to 48" I think it was.. On shrimp with seamullet rigs, they had thier Penns filled with line though...Should be plenty of pups, toads, and seamullets at that time, maybe a few flounder as well.. Sound could have some grey trout, flounder,or specks still a little early though from the shore... |
