Thumbs up Fishing report...

I had been studying the El Nino effects this winter for the east coast…no surprise the waters at Cape Hatteras and south were warmer than usual. At the end of February some favorable southerly winds brought that warm water near to shore and w/ it some big Red Drum (don’t ask how I know )… There and then I figured there would be an early and good showing of the fish in March. Like others I watched the SST’s in early March and the water progressively got warmer and closer to shore…it was going to happen and by last weekend the outlook for this past week for a good Drum bite was on…packed up and headed to…

Folks I finally figured out something right…the Red Drum bite this past week was EXCELLENT ...

But we had to work for it! We fished almost nonstop for 4 days…hard fishing up to 20 hours a day! And we were very glad we bought 2 flats of frozen Bunker back in late December last year…kept it in a deep freeze until this week, so we had no worries about finding bait! And the 2 and half month old frozen Bunker worked just fine!

For the 2 of us we tallied 39 Red Drum …the amazing thing was that we had a good mix of Puppies, Yearlings and Citations… We had 12 fish over 40”…half of those over 45” and the largest was 49” … The warm water was what it was all about…at one point I had 65 degrees in the middle of the night…rather unusual for mid March.

Hope this is a sign of things to come!

Poppy

Nice trip. Sounds like a lot of fun.

It's heartening to see mention of so many puppies and yearlings. Hopefully that means that there have been some good spawns and the drum are becoming more plentiful and will need to expand their range! Based on my analysis of the prevailing winds and lunar phases in conjunction with the sunspot variance, I'm sure this school is headed to directly to AI.

I took a pledge this year of humility and vowed not to post any more pictures on the internet of the fish I caught…

But I look forward to others to strut their stuff w/ pictures…

It's like going cold turkey......

LOL…

Well then I'll look forward to a future post of yours referring to "once upon a time in March ... " with pics.

The Poppy Chronicles wouldn't be complete with images.

I just finished watching the newest video...I tell ya a lot of work goes into making a video like that, even if its only 5 minutes long. But believe me, them boys would be hung (or is it hanged?) up north...there wouldn't even be a trial for them...just straight to the gallows ...

Talking about videos...I had the new video camera w/ me on the trip as well as the still camera. Disappointed in the quality of the video we shot...maybe operator error? But I swear the biggin' Red Drum, especially the 2 48" fish, seem to know they were being video'd (cannot say "filmed" anymore) and put on a show like they were warriors fighting to the death! The 49" fish was a lightweight comparatively speaking...

Johm M we actually were fishing half the time away from... ... you kind of know where...

Surf water was over 60 degrees today in some places...if things develop I am thinking about going down again in the next few days...

I have always felt those Drum are the least fighting Drum of the year. I think its cause I am usually there when water is lucky if it touches 60. Glad to hear you had some with attitudes. One year the stripers were mixed with the drum down there and I swear the stripers fought like Drum and the Drum fought like Stripers. I never knew what I had till I saw them. It was the upper water temp range for stripers and lower range for Drum. That is a trip I shall never forget.

Time to pack. Hope that NE doesn't screw things up too much.
