Default Outcast 1625 vs. Wheels Fusion

I have the 1625, but have the urge to build a new heaver. Has anyone had experience with both of these rods? I was wondering how they compare?

I have had the Outcast 1625 as my "go to" rod for about 4 years now. Everything I have heard about the Fusion has my interest peaked. Like you, I'd like to put my hands on one and give her a go. Count me as interested as well......

Mike, if you don't need a new heaver before June 1, I'll be more than happy to let you throw my Fusion when you're down for cobia.

I've not thrown the Outcast. But the Fusion is the best surf rod I've ever thrown.

My builder, who lives in Hatteras, can build ya one for $350. Send me a PM if ya want to know more.

I'm sure he is catching them today. Maybe when he gets back he will chime in or be nice enough to let me give it a whirl.

Your builder is my builder, my friend.

And you should see the "fish scale" wrap he did on my Fusion. It's almost too purdy to fish with.

Default As I remember

John had told me 4 years ago when I got me 2 Outcasts that he was talking to Tress about one for himself. I don't know if he did or didn't.
I have 2 a 13 footer and a 12 6. They require 8 oz to load and have landed a 60 inch shark @ about 80 to 85 lbs with no trouble.
My signature picture below is the 13 footer matched to a 704z penn.
The 12 6 has a 525 Mag and the same is true it needs 8 to load. I have pitched 12 on the 13 footer have not needed to do that with the 525.

To hear the guys talk Tommy Wheeler has got a great system and the big rods (Nail and the others are killers.
If you contact Rob (the general on the Fishing Militia) or Tommy himself he can give a run down on the sellections they have on Heavers now .
I think there are 3 currently.

Outcast is a good "stand there and hold it rod".. Fusion is a little heavier to hold, but worth it if you want extra distance to go with the cast.. The wieght is a little less than the old 1509 breakaway, but it throws even further.. Outcast loads a little easier, but the fusion has much better recovery, actually decreases possibility of backlashes, also seems to cast more accuratly as well..

Derf, last I heard John was on Ocock watchin drum videos.....

Thanks Drumdum that is the kind of comparison that I was hoping for. I sounds like the Fussion would be in the middle between my 1509 and Outcast in terms of weight and a little bit better caster. Now I have an excuse to build a 13' rod.

Thumbs up

First, I’m a rod maker and just your average, everyday, surf caster; I can hit
about 450’-500’, real time – I’ve cast against a measured string stretched down the beach with 6 & bait on.
I have built and cast a lot of Wheeler’s Infernos and Fusions. I’ve never built nor
cast a Nail.
My rod of choice is the Inferno. I cast, with what I think is called a Hatteras
Thump kind of cast. At the last minute one adds real power and real muscle to a
kind of whiplash movement just before release.
I understand that the Nail is for a muscle man with a backbone of tempered steel;
that is definitely not me; I’m 6’-4” tall and about 210lbs and will be 60yrs old in a couple of weeks. Don’t cross me though, I’m a vet and could snap any minute.
With the Fusion I can feel the last minute confirmation of the whiplash better
than I can in the Inferno, but I have never got the distance that I get with the Inferno.
I have cast with 6, 8, 10, 12, and 16oz & bait with both blanks and they will
both handle any of those weights with no problems whatsoever. I get the greatest distances when using 6oz.
Last December, The Point was inundated with big, bad, biters. My brother beached
a 200lb Sand Tiger on an old 13’ St. Croix. I had one of several hook-ups with these beasts, myself. One spooled me with the drag set at maximum, the other broke off
but not after it had once completely cleared the water out about 700’, and I tell ya it was
significantly larger than my brothers 200lber. I was using my Inferno, and the rod was bent over just a little, but by no means seemed under any real stress, at all. During that
same trip, I did beach several 24”, 27”, and a 30” Red Drum and frankly, at times, I
didn’t think that were still hooked up. The Inferno is a powerful toy. Last Spring I
beached a 50lb+ Bull Red, and the rod handled it with absolute ease.
With a Master Class caster, like Tommy Farmer, during multiple tests, it would seem
that the Inferno and the Fusion balance each other out for distances past 700’ – depending on the day. All seem to say that the Fusion is a little easier to load, but I still prefer and get better distance with the Inferno.
I’m in no way advertising for building a rod, nor for promoting the Wheeler blanks, BUT, the Inferno and the Fusion are world class tools, bar none; IN MY OPINION.
----------------------
Oooooooooooooooops !!!!!!!!!!!!
I forgot to mention a very special thanks to Tommy Farmer and Ryan White for
their critique while I was fishing with them last Fall. Needless to say the experience was
seriously intimidating, but they added to my abilities towards real distance. THANKS AGAIN.

Roy

Roy that is a realy nice review of the Wheeler rods. I wish we got that kind of input with all the inquiries that come thru.
Welcome to the board.
I am over 60 and I know what you mean about the backbone of the rods we throw today. Some time thoses glass rods of the 60's look good.
