were conventional reels direct drive back then? i notice that as the fish takes line, the reel handle spins backwards. i've experienced that a lot with my fly reel, but not with a conventional.

i also like how they gaff the ray. while i don't like catching them, i still don't think that they should be gaffed like that.

Things were alot different back then. That big drum surely was not released either. Sure it made some fine drum stew though.
