Default Camp grounds in the Outer Banks??

Can anyone suggest a campground open during Thanksgiving in the Outer Banks on North Carolina? Looking to tow my old Airstream down there.

Just getting started with surf fishing making several trips out to Montauk and am looking to grab my sister and head down to the outer banks for fishing and a little sight seeing.

Never been down that way before and have always wanted to go. Looks beautiful that long sliver of land that stretches for miles.

Any input would be welcomed. Especially a restaurant or two, pm if it is against forum rules to publicly suggest.

Thanks,

Vega68

tail end of the season, the NPS campgrounds are closed . some of the private ones are open . camp hatteras , the koa , are open year round ..
restaurants usually shut down after thanksgiving , at least they used to . haven't been down that time of year in a few ....

hopefully mr mom will chime in , i know he has stayed off season down there ....
i usually don't do campgrounds , unless the weather is real bad

found a list of the campgrounds ...

Hatteras KOA hands down. The folks that run the place are great, nice facility with clean bathrooms and showers. Less than 2 miles to the first OHV ramp and about 30 minutes the the point.

Can't help with campgrounds, but retaurants are right up my alley. My strong suggestions:
medium priced seafood, great quality = the Fishhouse in Buxton.
great small, sort of honky tonk bar raw bar and sandwiches = Pops Raw Bar in Buxton.
For expensive, excellent food with nice site and harbour view = the Charthouse in Hatteras Village.
there is one other place, whose name escapes me, on the left before you get to Hatteras Village that has a great deal. For less than their usual dinner price, they will cook whatever cleaned fish you have caught and bring them.
One must I suggest. Spend one day on this. Take the free ferry at the end of Hatteras Village and go to Ocracoke. Fish the beach there during the day and then, when you finish, go to Howards Pub for beers and dinner. You will not believe what you find inside Howards in this little island town.
For fishing on Hatteras, everything is wonderful. Fish just North of the Point, fish just past the Point on the right. Fish the beach down near the museum in Hatteras Village. fish North of Buxton wherever you see pulloffs. Fish deserted Pea Island if you don't mind walking on. Try for red drum, puppy drum, blues, flounder, speckled trout.
The beach at Avon was just named the #2 beach in the US by Mens Journal. Only the Banzai Pipeline came in ahead of it. The closest Florida beach came in #9.
Bait shops. There is a whole series of them, all different, each great in its own way. My favorites are Frank and Frans, the Red Drum, and Frisco Rod and Gun.
You are headed into territory where fishing is the #1 interest. You will have a great time if the weather cooperates.

Have rented a house for the last 3 years but not this year in Hatteras since the BFT have been south I think most of the Guys i go with are going to rent in Atlatic beach, More food and nightlife. Fishing is down right awesome in december I haven't tried earlier than that, As far as supermarkets there is a small family run one in Hatteras.

I'd vote for the camp hatteras. they give the KOA discount, have cement pads, clean, access on both sides of the road and an indoor pool. Have spent several summers down there and would recommend them in a heart beat!. either way, have a good time. Scott

I vote for Camp Hatteras as well.....

1. They are pro fisherman

2. Very friendly staff

3. Very clean place, well maintaned, nice sites. They also have an indoor heated pool if you're into it

4. Off season rate is very fair for the area and what you get for the money

5. If you don't drive on the sand a short walk over the dune and you're fishing from camp

They are a major sponsor in the Striper tourney down there....it's the weekend right after Thanksgiving....there will still be plenty of sites open, just figured I give ya a heads up on that.....the Outdoor Channel is gonna be covering the tourney, ya might get on TV ....

PS....the tourney headquarters will be in Camp Hatteras' bay side camping area...so you'll still have plenty of room oceanside to get a nice site with room around you....and if you want to see the weigh in it's close by, but not on top of you .....

I once went to a place called Salter Path Family Campground as a kid. Do NOT go there. It was the worst, hottest, buggiest camping trip of my life. Just a little warning for you to not pick Salter Path
