I need help choosing a rod for surf fishing. I need a rod thats able to throw out about 3-5 ounce weights w/ small baitfish like blues and pinfish and able to control larger fish in the 20-30 lb range.I guess u could call me a newbie at surf fishin but before i've lost big fish surf fishing because i used kmart specials
.Next summer ill be doing a lot of surf fishing when i can drive n need a rod that will last n can cast out those baitfish past the breakers. $ is an issue but i can prolly save up. Please throw out some ideas n lead me in the right direction. All help is appreciated. TY, Rob ![]()

Lamiglas
LamiglasMy favorite for 5 & bait is the casting model XS11MHC--11' rated for 3-8 oz, and I like it with 5 or 6. For spinning the XS10MHS is great--10' and rated for 3-8, but I really like it with 4. These are expensive rods, but Lami's Surf King series is very nice and a lot less money. The Surf King SK11MHS is 11' and rated 3-8, but I'm betting it likes 4 or 5 best. And it's $110 in the SOL store CG |

Try an Ocean Master 9 to 10 footer. Not much money and will go with the best of them .
Lami can come later.

Go with a Daiwa before Oceanmaster.
Get a less expensive model of a great brand (like a Daiwa or the Lami Surf King) before you go to a cheaper brand. A cheaper brand will generally be cast aside later. The inexpensive version of the good brand will work for years as a second rod once you upgrade. Lamiglas, Lamiglas, Lamiglas. One possible exception. The Tica rods, which pretty successfully mimic higher priced rods. My own experience with Tica was not great, however. Rod was too stiff for pleasurable use. |
