When is it best for big Drum? Does it start in Corrolla and work south? Or is it better in Hatteras right from the get go? What are the prime tides to fish them? Chunks or something else? Ant special rigs to use? Thanks

the best time for drum really all depends on the weather and water temps down this way. for sure the run starts here in va beach area middle of sept and that body of fish moves on down to kitty hawk etc. the pt area sees fish from different bodies of fish. depending on teh water temps drum and sissyfish can be mixed in. mid oct-nov are good times to look for drum down in hatteras.
as far as rigs. the standard is a 8oz, and a 1-3inch leadered fishfinder rig. try and not use the plastic ones, as they have a bad habit of breaking. hook selection is varied some still swear by the gami 8/0 some use the 10/0 j's while still a good portion still use the mustad 12/0 circle i've been using the 10/0 black demon for a while with good results. chuncked baits(but much smaller than sissy fishing for casting distance) will do ya fine. bunker is good, in teh fall mullet many times will out fish bunker thanks neil |

Welcome abord Neil. What brings you up North? How did you make out with that nasty foot injury you got back in June from that old rusty anchor?

Hopefully I'll catch up with both of you sometime next Spring for drum. We'll have to see how were doing with the baby and whether the Mrs. will let me out to play. In any event we'll be back down for cobia next June.
What kind of yak did you get Jeff? Next June you can paddle baits out for me, while I'm on the beach changing diapers. Six weeks and counting till our little girl arrives!

Six more weeks.
Won't be long now, big daddy. I bought a Prowler 13. I took it out yesterday for a two mile paddle off Sandbridge. Got dumped going out ... and coming in. Anchored up at the yellow bouy, dropped the chum buckets and gave a few eels a bath. No luck. Only a few small sharks. I did lose a rod, a Daiwa 50 (the one I landed the cobie with last June), tackle tray, cell phone, ect. I'm afraid I ain't any better yakin' than Al. |

The guys that do that kind of fishing are getting them every night in the western Pamlico Sound right now. Fish up to and over 60 lbs. Mostly on cut menhaden. Not really my bag but I am going to try to see if we can find some to sight cast to Saturday am. Fish like this:
![]() and ![]() make sure you do this: ![]() (these pics were taken about 3 yrs ago, i have not gotten into them like that again. it was pretty epic to say the least to see a school of about a 100 of these big mombos in about 2 feet of water)

The boaters have run into a couple of schools of big drum off the Virginia outer banks, too.
Like I said above, I paddled out about two miles off Sandbridge the other day in my yak. Didn't see any drum. Or cobia. Give it about a month for the big spot tails to start showing up in numbers off the beach. Pups are already here. ![]() |
