Hello Y'all,
Some Yankees are planning on evading your playground sometime in October. In fact, it’s been a while but I think it’s time to do it again. Hopefully by the October month I should be all bassed out and a trip down south may be in order. Although yours truly fished it in April and May, can anyone tell me something exciting about the late October month? Destination: Hatteras Point and we are probably staying at Avon / Buxton town. Target: The mighty drum and anything else that will take my chunking abuse. Come on now... it's time to spill the beans and cough it up. Thank you in advance! “Crazy” Alberto NonStopFisher@Optonline.net

Here's a schedule hint Alberto. From Oct 25 to Oct 29 is the yearly Drum Tournament sponsered by Frans and Frans. The beach from Avon to Salvo (Ramp 23 to 38) will be packed. The Point area (off limits for Tourney) will be less packed than normal. You may want to schedule your trip either the week before or the week after.

If you have to walk an 8 oz down the beach, the water is right for good drum fishing. The rougher the better. Tournament weekends get so crowded that I stay home and work on rigs, ride the easy chair with AMC on. Not worth the hassle with the crowds, mid week is always better.

In fact, the years I fished it, I can safely say that we split 50% at the point and the other 50% elsewhere (and we did pretty good). In fact, we had big fish and other species that the local tackle shop didn't believe.... and they thought we were lying and didn't understand what we were talking about. Ehh...eh...eh... Similar to Montauk, NY, it's such a huge place and 90% of the folks fish the point while 90% of the local fish elsewhere (in Montauk). "Crazy" Alberto NonStopFisher@Optonline.net

Besides the crowds at the point, main worries are keeping untangled, and at night, keeping whats yours locked in the truck if you have to walk a ways. and besides the points a no brainer, you know a few fish will be there.
Old Drum fishing to me is a day spent scouting breaks, cuts, and outsucks, then going back and fishing at night with out the crowds. anywhere north of of ramp 38 is where its at in the fall anyway. cause the world record came from avon not buxton. But if you drink and enjoy crowds the point is the place to be. Solitude of the north beach , a good 50" fish and up is well worth the wait. If you do find the right spot and its producing a few fish, guard it well, because once the words out you will be covered up within an hour. Finally, cover your ears if your a purist, my boat goes in the water, and I will be down in Ocracoke inlet. The fall run of trophy old drum on the beach, nothing like it in the world. |
