Default Holden Beach?

Wifey is driving me crazy. Usually go to Frisco or Hatteras for vacation. Since we've already been down once this year she wants to goi somewhere different. I think it's cause I've spent years figuring out where I like to fish on HI. She's looking at emerald isle (I posted once on this earlier) Now she's looking at Holden Beach. Any word on the fishing down there? I know the beach is south facing and has a pier, but that's about it. Any insight is appreciated.

Yep south facing beach. LOOOOONG way down. It is close to the SC/NC border. Big flatties in the area. There a couple peirs in the area but they are a going away from here fast. If you have a small boat there is excellent fishing in the ICW and Inlets.

Instead of starting a new thread i'll just use this one.Hope nobody minds.

I'm going to Holden mid Sept. Anyone have info on what fishing is best that time of year? I don't fish the coast often but i'd like to pier and surf fish,as well as try the inlets and waterways.Any info appriciated.Thanks.

I grew up on Ocean Isle and I can tell you that the Surf fishing in that area isn't any where near as good as OBX area. South facing beach, shallow warm water - pretty far from gulf stream, gillnetting, etc - all explanations I've heard, but never the less, Surf fishing isn't all that good here. This is a very nice kid beach due to facing south. Seems like you can walk out couple hundred yards & still be in water waist deep... Kinda hard to cast far enought to reach the fish though.

That being said, In the ICW & Inlets, you will find flounder & Specs & occasional Drum. Fish piers with cutbait for shark, rays, Kingfish, sheephead. Fish rips & creek mouths with live mullet on outgoing tide. Depending on time of year you will catch lots of spot & croaker too around the inlets.

Just my $.02

I was down there a few years ago in September after my OBX trip got hurricaned away and the surf fishing was pretty good. Bluefish from 3-5 lb., a few of really decent sized spanish macs, and some skates all from the surf in front of our house on mullet rigs. I was cast netting bait right from the surf in front of our beach house in the early mornings. A retired guy that lived there a couple of doors down said pompano fishing there is excellent. He had a 5 gal bucket with about half a dozen 1-2 pounders so I believe him. Said he gets 'em like that all the time. Mybe it was cause of the hurricane but I thought it was great. There was a tackle shop on the island at the north end. Added bonus the marsh was right across the street. Didn't try the marsh or the pier when I was there.

I too have heard the Pompano fishing is excellent there. I've never seen / caught any, but others say it's great. I was told to try sand flee's on fishfinder, jighead, or egg sinker type rig. Usually they are relatively close to the beach so it'd be great light tackle / and I hear they fight like hell, and taste good too!!!

Good luck
