Default OBX directions

Just wondering how you guys go headed south on 95 from say Richmond area. Do you get of before Richmond? Just trying to find ways around all the traffic we seem to always hit?

You can take the beltway(above richmond) from 95 to 64 east to 664 to 64 west exit to the Chesapeake toll rd to 168 to 158. Or stay on the beltway to 460 down to 168 nice easy ride but watch your speed through the small towns.

We did that way last time. We hit so much traffic near one of those tunnels we were at a stand still for 45 mins. Maybe it was just a one time thing I don't know.

Derf
I did like the ride down 13 to the CBBT never seen that before. Thinking about that for the ride this October

No tunnels if you come down 460 FYI

Here is a list that I have been using to get to Hatteras for a few years now. (go twice a year). Nice easy ride. You can pick up the road anywhere on the directions and they will get you there. South 158 takes you into Nags Head. Directions are attached. Just right mouse click and view image, enlarge, then print....
Hope this helps.

beachtoad - if you are coming from upstate NY, do what Derf said. Been going for 19 years, and I wouldn't dream of going any other way.

Forgot to mention. Coming from NY. you can get onto Rt. 13 just over the Delaware Memorial bridge from NJ.. This route I think is also the one Derf is talking about. Just follow listed directions.

From Upstate NY, definately take rt 13, nicer drive, also closer to beaches if you want to take a detour to catch some early stripers

AVOID THE 95 CORRIDOR like the plague, if not perfectly timed it will take forever between DC and Hampton. I went last week, took 5.5 hours to get there from DC, took 10 hours to get back.

Rte 13 through DE is a bit long, but well worth it.

Actually, with the relatively new (within the past 5 years, anyway) Route 1 that parallels 13 for quite awhile, you can miss the "slowest, longest" part of 13 down past Dover.....

I don't take it (tradition gets in the way....), but it is a lot faster thru the upper part of Delaware. Just be warned that it is a toll road....maybe $3 to get past Dover.....

And certainly take the 13 by-pass around Salisbury MD (an extra 6 miles or so).....that part of the old 13 IS slow.............

even with 'perfect timing ' you can get screwed' .......
i used to drive a truck from lancaster pa to richmond va every friday ...
the last time we went to portsmouth island nc ; we left later in the evening (7 pm ish ?) from my mom's outside of annapolis . we had planned to make it past richmond that nite and finish up the ride the next morning ..
first an accident on rt 50 , then an accident on the woodrow wilson bridge ; altogether we sat for 3 + hours ... now don't get me wrong , i grew up in that area , i know all the ways to get around tie-ups ... i'd rather have a than go that way ....

I think we are going to leave at 11 pm and drive it at nite this time. its an 11-12 hr trip from up here just to Nags head area. Surely the early morning should be easier in the bigger areas.

13 or 460 off 95 won't know till I start driven. all depends how I feel. Thanks for the pointers guys. I will drop a line here to see who will be down Oct 14-22nd. Derf I know you said you would be in the area then. Hope to meet some of you sometime.

Until then 3 weeks till Race Point out on the cape. can't wait....
