Default Surf Sharking

So the family unit and i will make our 8th trip to Hatteras Island on 8/26 but we're going back to our original location and staying in Hatteras Village. Been in Avon the last 2 years.

Knowing what we all know about surf fishing at that time of the year, 10" blues, I've finally decided to try and fish at night for sharks on the beach.

That's if I can stay sober a few days on the beach so I can fish at night.

Figure I'll head out around 11:00 pm - 2:00 a.m. or so depending on tide I guess.

What's best tide, bait, what kind of rig, etc... Figure I'll use my 10' MH Lami Surf King, with an Avet SX, with either the 40lb braid already on it or step it up to 60 or 80? Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

I think the 40# is OK, but go with a longer and stronger shock leader than you normally would for drum. I'd use 15-20' of 80 or 100# mono to try and handle a four or five foot biter that rolls up your leader or gets tail wrapped. Ask Ginger or Frank at F&F's in Avon about bait & rigs. Dillon's in Buxton could help too.
Good luck--let us know how you do--CG

Default Subourbon's shark rig

Here is a link to Subourbon's shark rig. When it came to sharks he was the man. RIP Sub.

Default wpw

Nice rig and nice pics. I remember Subourbon from another board I believe. Didn't know he past away.

What about bait? Little bluefish? Whole bunker? Stray cats

Thanks!

My suggestions:

I'd choose the 40 lb braid over anything bigger because of the greater line capacity. Its length and not strength that would allow you to beach a larger size biter.

For bait, if you have some way to get the bait out (yak, etc) then you could stop by one of the Marinas around 5:00 when the boats come in and get the remains of the days catch. Big heads and big chunks of meat remain after they clean the fish. If you have to cast the bait out, then normal fish heads or fish chunks just like you were drum or cobia fishing would work best.

I will have my yak there but have never taken the yak into the surf at night. I can see it now, me paddling out with a big bloody fish head dripping blood thru the scupper holes in my tankwell, ya could just call me the human chumbucket

Default How far out

I'm going to be in Duck. I know that you need to cast out really far to get into deep water. Do the sharks come in close or do I need to cast out 300 feet?
